NSHSS Celebrates Annual Scholar's Day in U.S. Senate

Claes Nobel addresses scholars in the U.S. Senate
NSHSS members, families, educators, and organization partners from 30 states and six countries gathered on June 19 in the U.S. Dirksen Senate Building in Washington, D.C., to celebrate and recognize excellence at our annual Scholar’s Day program. Mr. Nobel presented scholarships, recognized honored educators, and met with students and parents following the program for photographs. Nearly 500 student members and their families began this memorable day visiting the NSHSS College Fair, held in the U.S. Hart Senate Building, featuring representatives from 12 top domestic and international universities. These university representatives also attended the afternoon Scholar’s Day program in order to help celebrate and meet our students.
During the recognition program, the chief of staff of U.S. Senator Isakson offered senatorial greetings. Members were also privileged to hear from Ron Moss, Director of Undergraduate Admissions for Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Professor Richard O'Kennedy, principal researcher with the Applied Biochemistry Group and Vice President for Learning Innovation at Dublin City University, announced the new DCU “Think Science” competition for members.
The audience was then treated to a stunning piano performance by Lena Ye, NSHSS Claes Nobel Scholarship recipient from Iowa, who is enrolling at Harvard University. Lena is an award-winning pianist who has appeared on National Public Radio’s “From the Top,” a program showcasing young classical musicians.
A highlight of the day was the keynote address from NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel, who called for a “global change for global survival,” encouraging us to “tap into new power of transformation” and become much “kinder to ourselves and to the environment.” He emphasized his belief in the Power of Youth, to help find solutions to change the world. -MORE-
