Texas Member Lindsey Maxon wins National Faulkner-Wisdom Creative Writing Prize

Lindsey Maxon of Arlington, Texas, has won the 2007 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Prize for High School Short Story. The Faulkner-Wisdom Creative Writing Competition is a national writing competition attracting very strong writers. As the winner of the high school category, Lindsey received an expense-paid trip to New Orleans to attend the Words & Music literary conference and awards ceremony to accept her prize. She was awarded $1,000, including $750 for her as the author and $250 for her sponsoring English teacher, Ms. Pamela Hansen. Lindsey has also written a novel, and while in New Orleans, she had the opportunity to meet with both a literary agent and a book editor.

Lindsey is a gifted writer, and the Faulkner Prize is the 10th national award her writing has received. She has also received multiple national awards from the prestigious Scholastic Writing Awards. Additionally, her works have also garnered 80 awards in statewide and regional writing competitions. She has published in literary journals and online.

In 2006, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Texas Cultural Trust Council named Lindsey a Young Master in Literature, which recognized her remarkable creative writing ability. The Young Masters Program identifies and supports students who demonstrate exceptional talent in a fine arts discipline, such as writing, who may become the next generation of professional artists and writers in Texas. As a Young Master, Lindsey received a $7,500 scholarship to continue her development as a writer while still in high school.

Lindsey is a top student maintaining a 4.0 GPA and scoring 2400 on the SAT. As a junior at Lamar High School, she is active in Latin Club, National Honor Society, UIL academic teams, and on the school newspaper. An active volunteer in the community, she is President of the Teen Library Council at her local city library and has twice earned the President's Volunteer Service Award. Lindsey plans to become a novelist.

Congratulations to Lindsey on her latest success as a writer.
