Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Member Event
Robert Blust, Dean of Admissions at
Marquette University, spoke to a gathering of NSHSS members on October 2
at the historic Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. Dean Blust provided valuable
insight on the college admissions process and urged members to "Be the
difference." Members also had the opportunity to meet Dean Blust following
the program, and to hear and meet NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel. NSHSS staff
members and Mr. Nobel were attending the annual conference of The National
Association for College Admission Counseling.
"I thought each speaker had a unique message to offer the students, and I
was truly inspired!" -- Cyndy Brault, College/Career Advisor, Palos Verdes

Los
Angeles, California - Member Event on UCLA Campus
Hundreds of NSHSS students and
their families participated in a member event on the UCLA campus Grand
Horizon Ballroom on August 10, 2004. The event opened with harpist
Kathleen Moon and a rousing version of the national anthem performed by
NSHSS member Julie Morgentaler. Advisory Board Chair Claes Nobel was the
keynote speaker discussing the power of youth. Other speakers included
Pablo Mejia, UCLA admissions officer, who spoke about the college
admissions process and met with interested families after the program.
Members also heard useful advice from two UCLA students – outgoing student
council member Anthony Eskander and incoming student council member Kinbo
Lee. Don Banks, community leader and father of NSHSS advisory board member
Tyra Banks, talked with members about his daughter’s rise to success,
encouraged all members to pursue their dreams, and reinforced the idea
that any one person has the capability to make a difference in the world.
Member Nick Malone, of Newport Beach, California, won a raffle for an
autographed copy of Advisory Board Member John McCain’s book “Why Courage
Matters.”
“NSHSS has a great cohort of students who are the go-getters, who take
the initiative, and are leaders!”

"I have never been so impressed by one
event. It was amazing to see all the different people who had traveled so
far such as myself to such an exciting event. Mr. Nobel was an awesome
speaker and it was great to see that there are so many people involved in
NSHSS. I had a wonderful experience."

Colleen
Barrett, NSHSS Advisory Board Member and President of Southwest
Airlines, hosted a member event at her headquarters office at Love
Field in Dallas, Texas, on March 12, 2004, from 11:30-1:30. Southwest
Airlines put together a special luncheon for members and their
families. This free member event featured a scholarship winner, Mr.
Nobel and Ms. Barrett as speakers, and an outstanding violin
performance from NSHSS member Rachel Patrick, of Bloomington High
School South in Indiana.
Colleen from Southwest Airlines was a great hostess. I enjoyed hearing
her speak about Southwest and the wonderful people that work with her.
It was cool to meet such a powerful woman. It was very impressive for
a person in her position to take time to host a luncheon for a group
of high school students.

NSHSS Members were invited to an event at the Grand Lawn of
the Wyndham Orlando Resort on Saturday, Feb. 28th. It was a beautiful,
sunny day in Florida for members and their families to meet new
friends, spend time together, celebrate success and meet Mr. Nobel.
There were two scholarship presentations to NSHSS members. NSHSS
partners; EF Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, People to People and
Presidential Classroom were on hand to talk about their programs and
how NSHSS members might participate.
"I just wanted to let you know
once again how much I enjoyed yesterday's member event at the Wyndham
in Orlando. Mr. Nobel is truly a wonderful man. If only there were
more people as generous and considerate as he, then the world would be
a much better place. That was truly an honor to be able to meet him
and I am very proud to be in a society that is associated with him.
Also, I was very pleased to hear from the other partners of NSHSS. I
am glad to know that this society is partnered with such great
organizations. I really enjoyed the event, and I hope that there will
be more to follow."

partners, Presidential Classroom;
Projects Abroad; Habitat for Humanity; and
NASA, and our advisor board member Margaret Daniels Tyler, executive

NSHSS members were also invited to a member
event on October 3 on The Queen Mary, the historic ship harbored at Long
Beach, CA. where NSHSS participated in the annual conference of the
National Association for College Admission Counseling. Members were
allowed to tour the ship at no charge (regularly admission is $20). Mr.
Nobel presented an NSHSS scholarship to Berkeley freshman Charlene
Kemmerer and introduced speakers from Presidential Classroom and Mr. Don
Banks, Executive Director of TZONE, and father of advisory board member
Tyra Banks. Over 350 members also heard from authors Margo Bane Woodacre and
her daughter Steffany Bane, co-authors of “Doors Open From Both Sides,” a
guide to making the challenging transition from high school to college.
“I wanted to tell you how exciting the
activity at the Queen Mary was on Friday, October 3rd. I met so many
wonderful people and it was an honor to hear Mr. Nobel speak. I felt that
that Queen Mary event was very beneficial to my future success as a

"We would like to tell you how much we enjoyed the reception in
Washington, D.C. Of course Washington itself was great, but the highlight
of the trip was the NSHSS reception. It made our trip well worth it. Mr.
Nobel is an awesome man, and I myself was enthralled, along with both my
daughters. I am so glad that we were able to attend. Once again thank you
for the excitement of a lifetime, and the valuable information."
