Conferences and Programs
NSHSS staff attended the following conferences and programs in 2006 for professional development and to help further the goals of the Society.
National Association for College Admission Counseling Annual Conference (NACAC)
NSHSS attended and exhibited at the 62nd annual conference of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 4-7, 2006, meeting with over 4,000 high school guidance counselors and college admissions officials.
National Scholarship Providers Association Annual Conference (NSPA)
NSHSS Scholarship Director Dr. Susan Thurman and NSHSS staff attended the annual conference of the National Scholarship Providers Association in Atlanta, Georgia, October 25-27, 2006. NSHSS is a member of NSPA, and we have greatly benefited from our participation. The conference featured an exchange of information on topics critical to scholarship providers.
Institute for International Sport, World Scholar-Athlete Games
NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel introduced these prestigious Games on June 24 on the campus of The University of Rhode Island, which included a strong participation by NSHSS members. The WSAG games, heralded as the most unique sport and cultural event in the world, brought together more than 2,000 talented scholar-athletes and scholar-artists from over 160 countries, and all 50 U.S. states. NSHSS Vice President Maudelle Driskell participated in the announcement of these Games at the United Nations press conference in May 2006.
National Honors Convocation
NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel spoke at both the opening and closing of the National Honors Convocation program on June 28 and July 1, 2006, at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. NHC was founded by successful professionals in the fields of business, law, medicine, and television & film. These extraordinary individuals share a strong passion for their careers and a desire to help exceptional youth achieve similar goals. NHC offers NSHSS members and other honor students the opportunity to attend programs in the career fields of business, law, medicine, or television & film.
Griffith College Dublin School of Law Commencement Speech
On November 16th, 2006, NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel delivered the commencement speech to the graduates of the School of Law at Griffith College in Dublin, Ireland. Griffith College, the largest private university in Ireland, is also funding three scholarships for NSHSS members. Mr. Nobel and NSHSS Vice President Maudelle Driskell met with college officials and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate John Hume, who was awarded Griffith College's Distinguished Fellowship Award at the graduation ceremony. Mr. Hume expressed considerable interest in the organization and its students and in participating in a program in conflict resolution with our members in the summer of 2007 in Ireland.
