Carolyn Amole

 

A National Scholar Awards recipient, Carolyn also been named a 2003 National Coca-Cola Scholar.  Class valedictorian and a gifted debater, she is passionate about politics and hopes to be the first woman President.  She will be attending Harvard in the fall.

“I am certain that I want to dedicate my life to serving others; the most fulfilling experience of my life has been my volunteer work in my community.”

Laurel Angelica

  Well known in her community for organizing and spearheading a successful blood and bone marrow drive, Laurel received an Outstanding Youth Award from the American Red Cross.  Class valedictorian, Laurel loves dance and theater and will be attending Princeton University in the fall.

"As this chapter of my life is about to close and I eagerly embrace the education and adventure that awaits me in the coming years. I will always try to be a representative of the ideals this society stands for, striving to maintain excellence, leadership, and outreach to others."

Ann-Marie Arida
  Ann-Marie Arida, of Houston, Texas, will be attending Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos in the fall.  She is active in her community doing charitable work with orphans She holds leadership roles in her church youth group both locally and regionally.

"I feel I have great potential to help this organization.  I also feel I can represent this Society with honor and I am proud to be a part of it."

Monterey Park, California
  Anthony, class valedictorian, is the founder of the largest science outreach program in the San Gabriel Valley. He was recognized by President George W. Bush as the Regional Student Service Award winner for his dedication to elementary science leadership. This La Salle Senior Senator and ASB Commissioner accepted a full-Honors Scholarship to study biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

"The NSHSS will play a great role in college for me, as it is one of the few programs that will carry over into my college life. The support I have gained from it is something every student should have. I would love to be on the other side of program, helping create a website and program that will benefit all members."

Jennifer Holcomb
Alabama School of Fine Arts ‘03
Birmingham, Alabama
  Jennifer plans to be involved in leadership roles at the University of North Alabama in the fall where she will also perform as a violinist with the Shoals Symphony Orchestra. She has been interviewed and accepted as a Freshman Resident of the Lafayette Leadership Hall at UNA. She plans to be involved in Student Government and serve as an instructor for string students in the school’s laboratory elementary school.

"I relish an opportunity to work with such an elite group of scholars and leaders. It is a "once in a lifetime" experience to participate as a Council Member. The experience will have such a positive effect on my life and future educational and career goals. Hopefully, I can, in turn, provide positive feedback and encouragement to my peers as a direct result of this experience."

Rebekah Hurt
Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science ‘03
Dallas, Texas
  Rebekah greatly enjoys creative writing and is a published author. She has also served as a mentor in the Bringing Up Girls in Science Program, encouraging other young women in their personal and educational pursuits. This fall, Rebekah will attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas where she intends to pursue majors in political science, economics, and international studies. Rebekah has recently been recognized as a National Merit Scholar, a 2003 National Coca-Cola Scholar, and a President’s Scholar and Rotunda Award recipient at SMU.

"I am so excited to have been chosen as a member of the council, and I will draw on the incredible opportunities I have had for leadership and community involvement from my experiences at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science."

Shawntiah Jones
St. Joseph Catholic High School ‘03
Byram, Mississippi
  Shawntiah, of Byram, Mississippi, has been a leadership volunteer for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Light the Night. She also volunteers as a mentor to elementary school children. She plans to become a cardiac surgeon and a forensic pathologist. She is looking forward to double majoring in biology/ pre-med and chemistry/forensic science at Loyola University, New Orleans.

"A leadership position means that you represent not only yourself but that organization. You must be proud and what you do and you must reflect the best interest of your leadership. It is an honor not a privilege to be a leader. I listen to others proposals and I speak up when I think something would work."

Nigar Shaikh

Lawrence, New York
  Nigar Shaikh, served as the President of Lawrence High School's Student Government Association for the 2002-2003 school year. As a Student Government Association representative she was able to play an integral role in preventing the erection of a potentially hazardous cell tower near her high school. One of her main interests is to help girls maintain positive body images in a culture where great emphasis is placed on appearances. She was recently named a Presidential Scholar and will be attending Stanford in the fall.

"I am so grateful for everything the NSHSS and its staff have done for me, and I would like the opportunity to be of service to this prestigious organization.  In addition, I would like to help other students earn the same acknowledgements I received this year."

John Yargo
Bowling Green Academy ‘03
Orlando, Florida
  John Yargo, class salutatorian at Bowling Green Academy, has lived between Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida during his high school years. Nevertheless, he has been a member of the National Beta Club, the 4-H Club, and the Student Council, maintaining leadership positions in the latter two school organizations. He was chosen as an All-American Scholar and a recipient of a Second Century Scholarship and Waverley Club Scholarship. For his exemplary volunteer work in his community, he was awarded a President’s Student Service Award. He will attend Millsaps College of Jackson, Mississippi, in the fall of 2003.

"I believe that being an effective leader is one of the most rewarding experiences there is. I feel I have left a lasting influence on my community. I cannot describe why, but I have seen ripples in the water and changes for the better in my community."
