My Awesome Australian Adventure

During the summer of 2007, I decided to take a leap into the unknown--to travel Down Under.  Being something of a loner, I wasn't sure how I would fit in, but this trip turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

First of all, I was amazed by the group of studentseach one was evolved, intelligent, active, and in tune with the realities of the world. I was amazed at the conversations I would have in the evening, after the tours, about the lectures, and about the city, and about life. I wanted to listen intently to every word they said. I was also impressed by the complete lack of social hierarchy present. These kids were completely drama free.

One of the most impressive aspects of NSHSS is the diversity of its members. Indeed, perhaps the greatest advantage of membership in this prestigious society is the opportunity to interact with other members from different backgrounds and travel to destinations such as Australia, while exploring how individuals who share a common goal can make a difference in the world through heart-felt collaboration.

I decided to use every opportunity I could to start a conversation with somebody, to meet as many people as possible, and to make the most of my experience. This feeling propelled me forward, and with each step I learned more how truly much I needed to learn.

First though, let me quickly tell you about Sydney. The most important thing to remember, when visiting the Southern hemisphere, is that when its summer in the north, it is winter down south. And Sydney, in the winter, is cold. However, Sydney, is definitely one of most beautiful cities I have ever seeneven in winter. Sometimes I would get lost admiring the architecture, the Opera House being one structure that is truly amazing, but the mix of colonial style buildings and modern day skyscrapers is truly a site to be behold. The Harbor amazed me, but water always does, since I'm from the desert. I also loved the parks. Once again, the green of the trees was something I had missed since moving to Vegas, and the parks
gave me a sense of security and welcoming not usually offered in the desert. The guides on the trip were both knowledgeable and entertaining, full of witticism and anecdotes. Australia is beautiful. We would get to see an environment full of strange flora and fauna as the days progressed. I was astonished at these strange animals, and the natural beauty of the landscape.
