Advisory Board News
NSHSS University Relations Coordinator Veronica Squires hands Professor Di Yerbury a special gift—NSHSS mascot Leo the Lion
Our NSHSS Board Members have achieved success in a variety of areas on the national and international stage, from politics to entertainment, from sports to education. They have joined our board in order to connect with and to share their passions and interests with a new generation of outstanding young leaders.
We are very pleased that NSHSS members traveling with Mr. Nobel this summer had the opportunity to meet and hear from Advisory Board Member Professor Di Yerbury, Vice Chairman Emeritus of Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Yerbury, Australia's first University Vice Chairman (equivalent to the President of a U.S. university), graciously donated her time and wisdom to our students. She also shared her passion for Aboriginal art, being well known as an avid collector and custodian of Indigenous artwork from Australia.
Nobel Laureate News
Dr. Kroemer meets with NSHSS members at UC Santa Barbara
NSHSS members are fortunate this year to have the opportunity to meet two of our NSHSS Advisory Board members who are Nobel Laureates. In March, Dr. Herbert Kroemer, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics (2000) and professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, spoke to students at an NSHSS event at the university, and met with them after the program. Dr. Kroemer's research helped create the technology that has made cell phones and computers possible, and he eagerly shared his journey in research with NSHSS members. During the event, Dr. Kroemer spoke to the group, tracing his own development as a scholar and encouraging NSHSS members to find their personal passion and strive for excellence in their area of expertise, wherever it may lie. He exhorted students to keep in mind one of his favorite quotations, from Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
Members can also look forward to another opportunity this year to meet an NSHSS Board Member and Nobel Laureate. Dr. Ferid Murad, Nobel Laureate in Medicine (1998), will speak and meet members at our upcoming event in Austin at the University of Texas on October 6. Dr. Murad is a professor at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and will share his wisdom with aspiring Nobelists. Visit the events page for more information.
