A Message from Claes Nobel
Claes Nobel with NSHSS members in the
Australian Blue Mountains
Dear NSHSS Family,
I am amazed and gratified by the growth of our organization and the achievements of our members as a new school term begins. The vision that we had when founding NSHSS in 2002 of connecting and empowering our youth is coming to fruition each day. I am excited to report that we now have members from over 120 countries, and have become truly an international honor society. We want to reach out to young people all over the world to help them change this planet for us all.
I was thrilled to be able to travel to Australia again this summer with our members and watched them grow socially and intellectually as we discovered the culture and history of Australia, including its indigenous people and unique flora and fauna. The friendships and companionship that flourished make me hopeful for the future. I was also delighted to meet again with Advisory Board member Di Yerbury, Vice-Chancellor Emeritus of Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, who offered great words of wisdom to our group.
Over the past year, I have met many of you at member events. Our annual Scholar's Day Celebration in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Senate Building was a tremendous success. In March, we had a wonderful event in Santa Barbara, California, on the UCSB campus, where our Advisory Board member Dr. Herbert Kroemer, Nobel Laureate in Physics and professor at UC Santa Barbara, spoke to students and met them after the program. And we heard from Student Council and scholarship winner Shannon Babb, who last year was invited to the Nobel Laureate ceremony in Stockholm for receiving the Seaborg International Youth Science Seminar Award for her water treatment research. Next month, I look forward to meeting Dr. Robert Curl, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and Dr. Ferid Murad, NSHSS Board Member, who won the Prize in Medicine. They are eager to share their personal passion and academic success with our members at the University of Texas event in Austin on October 6. And I hope to meet as many of you as possible at The Carter Center in Atlanta on December 1.
Finally, I would like to offer my congratulations to our newest Student Council members and look forward to hearing their thoughts and dreams.
Sincerely,
Claes Nobel
NSHSS Advisory Board Chair
