The first of its kind to be held in Oklahoma City, the NSHSS Member Event was attended by students
from 14 states. Following the program, the students were invited to the University of Oklahoma
Health Sciences Center, to see the beautiful, newly landscaped campus and learn about opportunities
awaiting them in the health professions upon graduating from college. The OU Health Sciences Center
is one of only four comprehensive academic health centers in the country, offering programs in seven
health-related colleges: Medicine, Dentistry, Allied Health (physical therapy, nutritional sciences,
speech therapy, etc.), Public Health, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Graduate College.
The day before the Member Event, Mr. Nobel was the featured speaker at a luncheon hosted by the
Oklahoma School for Science and Math, a near-by high school for exceptional junior and seniors.
From there, Dr. Ferretti and Mr. Nobel and staff from both OUHSC and the NSHSS visited the main
University of Oklahoma campus in Norman (25 miles south of OKC), where Mr. Nobel met with OU
President David Boren.
The group also visited the OU History of Science Collections library, where 90,000 volumes of rare
works in the history of science are held. Many priceless items were on display, including original works
of Galileo (one of which was Dialogo (1632) for which Galileo was put on trial). The OU Health
Sciences Center is grateful to Dr. Kerry Magruder, an OU professor who graciously gave Mr. Nobel and
company the "grand tour" of the History of Science Collections library.
The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center would like to thank Mr. Nobel and the NSHSS staff
who accompanied him, Jim Lewis, Maudelle Driskell, and Gloria Smith, for coming to Oklahoma City.
Very special thanks go to Mary Blankenship Pointer, Oklahoma City resident and parent of NSHSS
member Natalie Pointer, the catalyst for the NSHSS visit to Oklahoma City and without whom none of
this would have happened.
Memories and friendships were made and a bond was formed between Mr. Nobel, NSHSS, and
Oklahoma City. The OU Health Sciences Center considers itself very fortunate to have had the
opportunity to host the NSHSS this year.
