Dear NSHSS Members,
At the Oklahoma University History of Science
Collections library, I was privileged to hold a manuscript by Galileo called the
Dialogo. This manuscript, published in 1632, had notes in the margin and
a few topical corrections. It was for the ideas expressed in Dialogo that
Galileo was put on trial over 300 years ago. Holding that book in my hands, a
book that was so filled with new ideas at the time of its publication, gave me
pause. I stood with a tangible link to a great mind of the 17th
century; this manuscript is a link to the past and to many ideas that
formed the base for our scientific knowledge today. You can see this wonderful
rare book with me in the photo below.
Later, I stood in front of our Society members and spoke with them. This,
I thought, is my link to the future. You are the link to the future.
As the leaders of tomorrow, you shape the future of our planet. The ideas
that you have and decisions you make determine our path. We are in good
hands.
Many of you are
graduating in just a few months, others of you are preparing for your final
years in high school. Whichever your group, every day brings with it the
opportunity to be a leader, to begin to shape the future. Seize it.
I will close with my hope to meet all of you at one of our upcoming member
events.
Yours in service to Earth
and Humanity
,

Claes Nobel
