My Journey to Become a Doctor: The University of Chicago Summer Medical Education

Shambrekia Wise, future doctor in training

Shambrekia' Wise
University of Arkansas
Class of 2007

Shambrekia' is a member of the NSHSS Student Council well on her way to realizing her dream of becoming a doctor. Here she shares her recent experience at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

What made the Chicago experience priceless? It was not only the wonderful atmosphere, but also that we were able to get acquainted with both the Deans and Admissions staff from Pritzker, as well as with the wonderful people of Northwestern University Fienberg School of Medicine and Rush University Medical Center. The Consortium of these three universities was a priceless opportunity. We had three of the top medical schools in the country to tell us what we needed to do to be competitive candidates when applying. It was a really good feeling to know that these individuals went out of their way to help us succeed.

There were many tears shed on the day we all departed. The the fall semester, I began constructing a MAPS (Minority Association for Pre-Medical Students) Chapter on my campus. The Student National Medical Association heads this organization, but we didn't have one on my campus, I felt the need to start one. I am proud to say that my organization will hold its first membership drive in November  2006. I have my summer program to thank for this. From that experience, I learned that making a positive change is crucial in my journey to becoming a doctor. I don't expect an easy road, but I know that for most of the way I am in good company with my friends from SMEP.

Programs like SMEP are wonderful ways that you can meet new people and build up an endless network, but at the same time they are milestone markers in your life that help you further reach the successful leader that you are destined to become. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please visit the website at www.smdep.org.
