Our Australian Adventure

NSHSS members visit Sydney Harbour

his summer, NSHSS members had the opportunity to experience Australia with Advisory Board Chair Claes Nobel. Hosted by Macquarie University in Sydney, the group shared unforgettable learning experiences and adventures: enjoying a cruise on the beautiful Sydney Harbour; surfing on Manley Beach; getting up close and personal with kangaroos, koalas, wombats, Tasmanian devils, tropical birds, and even crocodiles; riding a scenic sender to the valley floor of the spectacular Blue Mountains National Park; taking a a skyrail cableway across the canopy of the Kuranda Rainforest; visiting the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park; and capping it off with a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, snorkeling, and scuba diving. -

An Alaskan Wilderness Adventure

I am sincerely grateful to NSHSS for awarding the NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) scholarship to me, which allowed me to enroll as a student in the Alaska backpacking and sea kayaking course during the summer of 2006. I just got back from Alaska recently, and can honestly say it was the most rewarding experience I have ever had! While on course, I learned so many things--about myself, about the technical aspects of an expedition, and about leadership in general. I have a hard time putting into words the nature of the course; it was one of the most difficult emotional and physical tasks I have ever undertaken (being wet for two weeks at a time sure can take its toll on your psyche), yet these hardships ultimately made the experience all the more valuable. -MORE-
