Presidential Classroom Scholarship Recipient Announced

Elaine Householder

We are very pleased to announce the recipient of this year's NSHSS/Presidential Classroom Public Service Scholarship, a $750.00 college scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored annually by our educational partner, Presidential Classroom, and awarded to an NSHSS member who has attended a PC program. The application is online and the annual deadline is August 1.

NSHSS members receive $100 tuition discount to any Presidential Classroom program when they use the application included in NSHSS welcome packet and receive special consideration for partial tuition scholarships and a full tuition scholarship to attend one of the programs.

Don't miss out on this life changing experience. For more information, visit www.presidentialclassroom.org or call directly at 1-800-441-6533.

This year's scholarship is awarded to Elaine Householder, of Bidwell, Ohio. Elaine is a senior at River Valley High School who attended the Presidential Scholars Program February 18-25, 2006. She is dedicated to bettering her school and community through volunteerism and public service. She writes that her Presidential Classroom experience has reversed her negative perception of public office after seeing our government in action. Her experience brought a small town girl out of her shell and inspired her to run for President of her State Beta Club and to run and be elected as her Senior Class President. She hopes to attend
Duke or the University of Virginia and major in International Relations.

"My experience at Presidential Classroom was all about taking risks, stepping outside of my comfort zone. I boarded an airplane alone to fly to a city I had never seen, to spend a week with people I knew nothing about. I left home unsure of what to expect and I returned changed, regretting only the week had ended so soon . . . I loved my PC experience because of the connections formed between people who otherwise might never had  had the opportunity to interact. Essentially, I learned that despite our different backgrounds and languages we all have something valuable to offer the world."

"I am so thrilled to hear that your students are coming to PC and enjoying it tremendously. We work hard to make our programs as excellent as possible, and we truly respect and support our future world leaders in all we say and do. We really value our partnership with NSHSS."

Note from Member

Dear NSHSS members,
This summer I was able to attend one of the greatest political programs available for high school students. The program is called Presidential Classroom, and I would recommend it to any high school student interested in sharing their political views or to learn more about what is going on in today's society. Presidential Classroom uses Washington D.C. as its classroom and students from all over the country as well as those from foreign countries join there to explore and expand their own personal views on life in general. If you are a student who wants to be treated as if you are a future leader of America, this is the perfect opportunity. While attending this program I was encouraged to try to understand what is going on in the world today by speakers such as Ralph Nader and many other important people. The people involved in putting this program together are very hard working and dedicated and they make sure that this experience is not only educational but fun as well. Through Presidential Classroom I have met so many different people and made quite a few friends whom I still keep in touch with today. I hope that by reading this letter someone would become interested in considering this as something productive to do for a week in their summer.
