Tsunami Relief: How You Can Help
Patricia Duncan
Granby High School, Class of 2006
Norfolk, Virginia
My name is Patricia Duncan, and I am a relatively new member of NSHSS. Very recently I have started a campaign called "Donate A Dollar" for the tsunami victims in South Asia. It is a school wide effort in which each student is encouraged to donate a dollar. Because of our school size, we set a class goal of 500 dollars for the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes as well as a 500 dollar goal for the faculty. To make it interesting for the students, it has become a competition for the classes
with the he winning class receiving bragging rights for the entire school. Like the Livestrong bracelets given out for donating to cancer, our effort has made bright buttons that you receive for every dollar you donate. I am trying to spread the word to others and especially to other NSHSS members. Knowing that this is a very distinguished organization full of bright, willing people, I thought that this would be the best place to post my idea and start spreading it to others. By
sharing this message, I hope other members will become inspired and want to do something to help the victims by organizing something in their schools.
Note: There has been a worldwide outpouring of aid for the tsunami victims in South Asia. Many young people are initiating relief efforts in their schools and communities. For more information on how you can help, here are some reputable organizations providing information. In particular, UNICEF has established a youth volunteer program with information at unicefusa.org/youthaction,
and our friends at Habitat for Humanity International are doing special
work in response to the tsunami. It doesn't matter which
organization that you choose; just get involved.
