Oct 27, 2011

NSHSS welcomed scholars, parents, and educators to our first event in the Gulf Coast area, held on September 24, 2011, on the Tulane University campus.  The event included a keynote address from NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel, scholarship presentations, educator recognition, and a college panel Q&A session.

Members and parents in the lobby. Mr. Nobel presented awards to Rachel Broussard, of Lafayette, Louisiana, who received a 2011 Academic Paper Award, as well as National Scholar Awards to student council members Ignacio Cruz, freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, and Katherine Mitchell, freshman at Georgia Institute of Technology. Tulane graduate student Jasmine Walker, NSHSS alum, also met and spoke to students at the event, leading them in the NSHSS pledge. Ignacio, Katherine, and Jasmine also met with area students in the morning prior to the event who were interested learning about the Society.

Following the recognition program, guidance counselor Missy Sanchez of the Woodward Academy in Atlanta, moderated an information-filled college panel discussion with admission officials from Bocconi University (Milan, Italy); Dublin City University; Emory University; National University of Ireland; the University of California, San Diego; the University of Illinois; the University of Melbourne; Trinity University; and Tulane University.

The event capped off our NSHSS participation at the 66th National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) National Conference in New Orleans, an. annual conference that welcomes thousands of high school counselors and college admission counselors nationwide every year for workshops, seminars, and networking. NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel along with others met with and spoke to college admission counselors and university representatives.

NSHSS looks forward to returning to the Crescent City for future events!
