NSHSS is continually expanding its scholarship opportunities for members to help fulfill its mission of recognizing academic excellence and encouraging members to apply their unique talents, vision, and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world. Scholarship Recipient Announcements
Semester at Sea Program Scholarship for Fall 2012 Voyage
Yadhu Dhital, a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, has been selected for the NSHSS Semester at Sea Scholarship. Yadhu was born in a refugee camp in Nepal, where his parents were exiled from Bhutan. He was able to come to the U.S. and graduate from high school in Pittsburgh, where he was a top student.
National Outdoor Leadership School
Crystal Powell, Fallon, NV.
Absaroka Backpacking Course, Yellowstone National Park
For the past four years Crystal has been researching and filming a documentary on domestic and dating violence in northern Nevada. Crystal hopes to gain confidence, adaptability, and tolerance for adversity, while on her NOLS course. These skills will help her become a worthwhile journalist and a leader, where her tenacity, effort, and perseverance will benefit not only her future educational goals, but others' as well.
Emma Lee, Emma Toronto, ON.
Rock and River Course, Wyoming and Utah
Emma has been a volunteer at Outward Bound Canada. Each summer she participates in a wilderness excursion with friends or leads a YMCa Youth trip. After completing her NOLS course Emma hopes to be able to apply her teamwork skills in virtually all areas of her life--academics, extracurricular activities, and future endeavors. Her goal is to improve her performance where she is already seen as a leader, and expand her leadership roles in the future.
