  • Millennial Economic Impact - NSHSS 2012 Student Career Survey

    Apr 26, 2012

ATLANTA — Over 10,000 members of the National Society of High School Scholars, known as NSHSS, weighed in on the annual career survey released today. This survey is a snapshot of the career mindset of the millennial members within NSHSS. Millennials are generally classified as those born between 1980 and 1999. Survey participants shared compelling information that could impact the future growth of corporations and government employment domestically and internationally.

President and founder of NSHSS James W. Lewis states, “Organizations should pay attention to what these millennials are saying. They are our future workforce, and corporations could benefit from understanding and implementing strategies that help engage and maximize their productivity.”

Some key highlights in this survey reflect that students are responding to the call generated from both government and private sectors for students to choose careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), as well as business. Within the top choices of preferred companies for employment, 7 out of 10 are STEM-based. Forty-seven percent of these scholarly millennials are strongly interested in government agencies such as the CIA and FBI. They also showed a strong interest in military careers. Although the economy and employment opportunities have headlined the news reporting grim prospects for work, 48% of the students surveyed still remain optimistic that they will find employment soon after graduation from college. Another key takeaway of these findings is that this millennial workforce hopes to embrace a harmonious work/life balance and to work for companies that are socially responsible. Survey respondents also highly ranked the importance of friendly coworkers and diversity in the workplace as critical in job selection and retention.

This year’s NSHSS annual career survey reflects the changing mindset of these scholarly students, who represent over 750,000 members of NSHSS. These are high-achieving scholars focused on college and careers.

  • NSHSS, The Creative Coalition, and WWE to Fight Against Bullying

    Feb 04, 2012

There’s a natural connection between the 700,000 high school students, college undergraduates and young working professional members of NSHSS and the mission of the Creative Coalition and the World Wrestling Enterprise’s anti-bullying campaign, “be a STAR”. “be a STAR” stands for ‘Show Tolerance And Respect’ and is to ensure a positive and equitable social environment for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation through grassroots efforts beginning with education and awareness.

New bullying statistics released in 2010 are showing that bullying is still a problem among children and teens, but is taking on a different approach with cyberbullying becoming more and more rampant in school and after school among teens and children. Social networking has provided an entirely new environment for bullying to take place. According to bullying statistics 2010, there are about 2.7 million students being bullied each year by about 2.1 students taking on the roll of the bully.

NSHSS is working closely with The Creative Coalition, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and 43 other alliance members to aggressively prevent and stop bullying. Through the “be a STAR” campaign and throughout 2012, NSHSS will be promoting positive methods of social interaction and encourage people to treat others as equals and with respect because everyone is a star in their own right.

  • ATLANTA BESTOWS TOP HONOR TO JAMES W. LEWIS

    Feb 03, 2012

ATLANTA – (February 1, 2012) Mayor Kasim Reed of Atlanta bestows the city’s top honor on James W. Lewis, founder of The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). The Phoenix Award is presented in appreciation for his outstanding contributions to the City of Atlanta and its citizens.

James W. Lewis has helped over 1 million students achieve academic success as founder of Golden Key International Honour Society and currently NSHSS.

Lewis began his journey as an undergraduate to impact students’ lives by defending equal education and equal rights in the cradle of the civil rights movement. He was awarded GSAE's Allen R. Johnson Leadership Award for his ability to influence others by modeling positive behavior, gaining cooperation from others and fostering creativity in innovative thinking.

James is also known as a pioneer in the fight against AIDS. His work with the National AIDS Fund garnered him the honor to be one of the first readers of names for the Quilt on the National Mall in Washington D.C.

James was the youngest recipient of the American Eagle Award from the Invest-In-America National Council presented in the U.S. Senate. This award was bestowed upon recipients who exemplified outstanding leadership and made significant contributions to the American free enterprise system. Other recipients include President Ronald Reagan, Malcolm Forbes and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Warren Berger.

The Mayor’s office stated it was truly an honor to award this Phoenix award to Lewis. “Atlanta is truly blessed to say James W. Lewis is one of her own. He gives so much to students and works hard along side of them to set an example for others to give selflessly,” states Mayor Reed.

As a devoted family man, James wanted to share this award with his staff, family and celebrate it with his student members at their annual Carter Center event in December.
