National Society of High School Scholars

Monthly Update for April 2003

International Developments

Mr. Claes Nobel recently attended the annual meetings of the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE) and The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). Oscar Arias was the featured speaker at the NAIS conference. He is the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and former President of Costa Rica. You can find out more about Oscar Arias at his foundation's website. Both the AAIE and the NAIS have strong membership and support from schools all around the world including many American schools overseas. The Society is working to connect with schools internationally to offer membership to their outstanding high school students. We have partnered with schools in 16 countries so far that are handing out invitations to their qualified junior and senior students. We at the Society are very pleased to welcome all new members and look forward to connecting the best and brightest young people from all around the world. Click Here to see the current list of countries.

Welcome to Louisiana schools

Cecil Picard, State Superintendent of Schools for Louisiana, has introduced the Society to all of the public and private schools in Louisiana. Schools have received materials to nominate their top junior and senior students for membership in the Society. Click Here for more about this.

NSHSS International Student Council Nominations

The Society is requesting nominations for student council members for the 2003-2004 academic year.  Student council nominees must be members of The National Society of High School Scholars.  Student members may nominate themselves or other outstanding members.

The NSHSS International Student Council has the following duties and responsibilities including, but not limited to: making recommendations concerning program initiatives and new scholarship awards, communication with prospective and students members (i.e., member to member programs and website development), and to represent the society at state, regional, national, or international functions.

Only members who have graduated from high school this academic year and will be attending college this fall are eligible to serve as volunteer leaders for this next academic year. Please send your name, email address, college or university, past leadership experience, and a statement of 500 words explaining your interest in this leadership position to Dr. Susan Thurman. The deadline to nominate is May 15, 2003.  Student council members will be announced in the June edition of the Scholar’s Journal.

New Sri Lanka placements with Projects Abroad

NSHSS Projects Abroad Page

“Lush and mountainous with sea views, and elephants…” This is a description of the latest placements on the island of Sri Lanka. How do you fancy teaching English on a tea estate or in a Buddhist monastery, or saving turtles on a white beach? This is exactly what the first volunteers to this amazing island are doing.

In the Central and Uva Provinces volunteers can work in Tamil schools in the mountains where the kids’ parents work on the tea estates. Most schools in Sabaragamuwa Province (near the capital Colombo) are normal government schools with around 400 kids in each school; levels of English may be basic but the children understand enough for you to help them improve. The schools have a mixture of Sinhala Buddhist students, Muslims and Tamils attending lessons, so you’ll be in for a fascinating cultural mix. Volunteers can also teach local villagers in Buddhist monasteries which are often set in beautiful scenic spots on top of hills and surrounded by coconut trees.

Volunteer Dave Nightingale is working on a turtle project on the west coast near the town of Bentota where they help to release Olive Ridley, Leatherback, Loggerhead & Green turtles which land on the nearby beaches all year round. The turtle project has been running for 15 years and the number of adult turtles arriving in Sri Lanka is now increasing every year. Projects Abroad hope to play a part in continuing this success story.
