NSHSS membership reaches to the North Pole?  Member Courtney Doyel extends a North Pole hello to fellow members

Happy Holidays from the North Pole

Hey Everybody!

I’m writing from North Pole, Alaska, in the heart of the state.  Although it’s not the actual North Pole, it might as well be. It’s about 40 degrees below zero right now and hopefully will be back up to zero degrees by Christmas. In North Pole, we are decorated for Christmas all year long.  The light poles are candy cane striped, and as you leave town, you see a huge statue of Santa Claus.  The only Christmas decorations that aren't up until later are the Christmas lights, because in the summer we have almost 24 hour daylight.  Now it's dark most of the time so the lights brighten everything up.  I hope everyone gets to relax from their studies during Christmas break.

Sincerely,
Courtney Doyel, NSHSS member

Advice from the Student Council

For me, college, while definitely an incredibly new and exciting experience, has required some adjusting to.  The newly gained independence, responsibility, and rigorous workload definitely brought me into the "real world."  I have learned that college isn't just about more reading, less class time, and harder tests.  It's about being on your own for the first time.

Although it has probably been said innumerable times, I cannot stress the importance of completing your applications early.  Finishing your applications ahead of the deadlines will help prevent unnecessary stress and will ensure that you have submitted your best work.  Silly typos and grammatical errors will not be looked upon favorably, especially considering how easily they can be avoided.  In addition, have peers, teachers, or family members check over your applications to pick up any mistakes you may have missed.

College Tip
Filling out the FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

The average cost of a year’s tuition, room and board, and fees at public universities last year was $10,636 and $26,854 for a private university, according to the College Board.    To help with these soaring costs, most colleges offer financial aid packages including grants, scholarships, loans, and work study.  The first step in applying for available financial is completing the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To apply for federal student financial aid, and to apply for many state student aid programs, students must complete this form, either online or through the mail. The information provided on the FAFSA determines if a student is eligible for financial aid.

The FAFSA is used to calculate the amount of money that the family is expected to be responsible for, referred to as Expected Family Contribution (EFC).  The calculation is based on a number of factors, including how many siblings will be in college at the same time, how near parents are to retirement, as well as income.

The form is available January 1 of each year and you can find it on the FAFSA website.  You submit one form only and it is sent to all of the schools you indicate.  However, different schools have different deadlines for the FAFSA, so it is critical to keep on top of those by contacting each college’s financial aid office. Review the FAFSA website carefully before beginning so that you have all the documents on hand and are not blind-sided by any of the questions. You can also call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) with any questions about the form.

Here are some tips from NSHSS partner FastWeb for filling out the FAFSA
