Monthly Update for March 2003

$5,000 Claes Nobel Academic Scholarship Presentation

Claes Nobel visited Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy campus on February 24, 2003, to present a $5,000 Claes Nobel Academic Scholarship to senior Laurel Angelica, of La Canada Flintridge, California.

Claes presented Laurel with the award during an honors assembly and spoke to the students, parents, and faculty about his faith in the promise and potential of youth and his commitment to world betterment. Claes and the NSHSS staff were welcomed graciously by the Sacred Heart community, including Principal Sister Celeste Marie Botello and Assistant Principal Katy Sadler.

Laurel is locally known for her work in organizing the La Canada Community Blood/Bone Marrow Drive, and Claes said of her, "She is already a role model . . . And if you look at her name, Laurel means honor and Angelica --maybe she has wings."

Laurel has been accepted to Princeton University, where she plans to major in international relations.

New Competition for Members Only

NSHSS is pleased to announce a new opportunity for our members--The Community Service Project Competition. We are challenging our members to develop community service projects that can make a real difference locally or globally. We are looking for proposals that allow the student to decide who, what, when, where, and how to organize, fund, publicize, and manage a service project. Members submitting the top three proposals will be awarded $1,000, $300, and $200. Service projects will be shared on the web site. All members are eligible to submit proposals, including those who have graduated. The deadline is August 30. Guidelines and application will be posted on the web in the next few weeks.

Academic Paper Awards Reminder

You still have time to submit entries for the Academic Paper Awards Competition. Make the most of your hard work and submit up to three papers you have written for a class as a junior or senior. Awards range from $100 - $500. The deadline is May 15. Click here for application and guidelines.

Projects Abroad - International Volunteering and Career Exploration

How to spend the summer? Projects Abroad offers summer teaching programs in most of the countries participating in the program. Summer classes tend to be small and relaxed, allowing volunteers to participate in indoor and outdoor classes, sports, and organized trips away from school.

Project Abroad is also announcing a new program in South America - teaching and care projects in Cochabama, a vibrant university town in Bolivia.

Recent projects also include:
*Environmental awareness in India with the Green Village Project in the southern state of Tamil Nadu
*Work with orphaned children in the Ukraine
*Journalism course in Russia
*Teaching in Mongolia
