Scholarship Resources: State Agencies
By Jean Danielson, Director, Educational Research,

There are many places to look for scholarship resources. One very important area that is
often overlooked is your state's education department. These agencies are called different
things, from Department of Education to State Board of Education. Use your favorite search
engine to locate your state's government home page and then look in the education area for
scholarships.
For example, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has a site that can be found at
www.pde.state.pa.us.
Sites like this are comprehensive and include all facets of educating a
state's populace, from K-12 issues, libraries and e-grants to educational technology. Use this
site as a resource not only for information about scholarships but to know more about
academic standards and even college profiles in your state. The Texas Education Agency can
be found at www.tea.state.tx.us and the California Department of Education is found at
www.cde.ca.gov. Use these sites for information on scholarships, testing and assessment.
Some states will give grants to you and automatic admittance to their state's public
universities if you meet certain standards. You can find out what these standards are.
The bottom line is the more choices that you have the better off you will be. And the more
that you know the better able you will be to make good choices. Look in the member
resources section of the website for more state education sites.
