Important Dates - Scholarship Deadlines

March 1, 2005 - The Claes Nobel-People to People Student Ambassadors Program Scholarship
This is a tuition scholarship for one of the 5 summer leadership programs from People to People Student Ambassadors Program. The award covers the cost of the program; travel expenses are the responsibility of the student. People to People will refund any deposit already paid by the student selected. Eligible programs include law, leadership, medicine, international diplomacy, and theater and the arts. Click here for scholarship application. The website also contains information on raising funds from the student's community to help fund their participation.

May 1, 2005 - Academic Paper Awards competition - submit up to 3 papers you have written for a class as a junior or senior: Application and Guidelines.

August 1, 2005 - NSHSS/Presidential Classroom Public Service Scholarship
NSHSS members who have attended a Presidential Classroom Program are eligible to apply for an academic scholarship of $750.00 funded by our educational partner Presidential Classroom. Robert Sheppard Leadership Award
We have received an overwhelming response to the Robert Sheppard Leadership Award for outstanding initiative in community service. Our members have shown an impressive dedication to helping others, and the recipient of this $1,000 scholarship will be announced in our next update.

Finalists for the Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships and National Scholar Awards are being reviewed and will be announced next month.

Boston, Massachusetts
NSHSS is holding a member event on the Harvard campus on February 19, in the Fogg Art Museum, where Dean of Admissions William Fitzsimmons and Chairman Claes Nobel will address our members. A wrap-up of the program will be posted on the website.

San Diego, California
NSHSS members can enjoy a cruise with staff, Mr. Nobel, area Educators of Distinction, and other notables on Feb. 26 in the San Diego Bay.

Dallas, Texas
Advisory Board member Colleen Barrett, president of Southwest Airlines, will again host a luncheon for our members at her headquarters in Dallas, on March 30, 2005. Members will receive details soon.



Presidential Classroom

New Partner--My College Guide
NSHSS recently formed a partnership with the publisher of My College Guide, a publication geared toward high-ability, college-bound high school students who have just begun their college search. The publishers will provide members of NSHSS with a free copy, either in a print or electronic format, of its next edition upon request. The View from Harvard Yard

Blizzards, seeing the Red Sox win the World Series while living in Boston, and staying in a dorm whose first residents were members of the class of '74 ... 1874, that is. When I first arrived at Harvard, I didn't anticipate any of these experiences. I knew that Harvard had a 369-year history, and I knew that I could expect surprises, but I had no idea just how wonderful those surprises would be.

Claes Nobel School of Distinction Award

James W. Martin High School

Congratulations to James W. Martin High School, in Arlington, Texas, on being selected as our most recent Claes Nobel School of Distinction for excellence in academics and service. Martin High was nominated by Christien Perry, who is proud that the school has been consistently rated as an exemplary campus by the Texas Education Agency. The school excels through a high standard of academics, extracurriculars, and a variety of student organizations. Of the 225 teachers 83 teachers have advanced degrees. The Star Telegram gave Student Council the 2002 Youth Organization of the year award. The KEY club is an important part of the Martin culture and has approximately 800 members and is the largest KEY club in the world. Recently, Martin High School raised $16,000 for the Save the Children Tsuami Relief.

People to People in England

This past summer I went back to school again for the first time in eight years. I was with the first People to People Student Ambassador program at Cambridge University in England for four weeks. It really was like going back to school again for me, this time in the surreal, college-like atmosphere of Cambridge University. As a home schooled student since the age of seven, I can learn just as much from watching my classmates as I can from the classes. I tend to take a different view of classes than others do, however. I would rejoice when we were handed homework, while the others would groan. Read more.
