Richard Montgomery High School

NSHSS is pleased to recognize Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland, a Blue Ribbon School, as the newest Claes Nobel School of Distinction for its innovative program to help create future teachers, the Rocket Corps program. The program (based on the school's nickname), was designed to inspire and motivate young people to join the ranks of our nation's teachers in the future, to alleviate the projected critical shortage of teachers for our next generations.

Richard Montgomery High School serves a diverse population of approximately 2,000 students in grades 9 through 12 in Rockville, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C. Over the past several years, the school has been featured in "Newsweek" magazine as one the top 100 schools in the nation. Richard Montgomery High School was recently awarded the Blue Ribbon in Education Award by the United States Department of Education. Congratulations to Richard Montgomery High School. The school will receive a $500.00 award from the NSHSS Foundation a non-profit arm which recognizes excellence in schools and teaching.

Please read more out the Rocket Corps program from Coordinator of the program, Julie Good, who writes that "Rocket Corps is not going to solve the projected teacher shortage, which is estimated at over 2 million in the next 10 years. We are simply doing our small part, with the hope that our successful example will lead other school systems to follow...What makes someone want to be a teacher? Some teachers grew up knowing that is the career they want to pursue. For many more, the example of a revered teacher leads them to the career choice. Others need a spark that ignites their interest in a teaching career. A mentoring/intern program in high school, if done well, can provide that spark. It certainly has done so for many future teachers at Richard Montgomery High School."
