Shannon Babb
Highland, Utah
American Fork High School
Shannon is the recent winner of the Intel Science Talent Search for her research on water
quality, and is a Coca-Cola Scholar as well. She also has served on her local Youth City
Council and was been named the 2005 National Young Naturalist Award by the
American Museum of Natural History. Shannon will study environmental sciences at
Utah State University. Her passion is studying and improving water quality, not only in
her own backyard, but throughout the world.
Veronika Bordas
San Antonio, Texas
Keystone School
Veronika is ranked first in her class and is an award-winning bassoonist; she edits her
school's literary magazine, and has been recognized for her mathematical talents by Johns
Hopkins University. The eldest of seven children, she has learned responsibility and
leadership at a young age. She sets a wonderful example not only for her younger
siblings, but also for her community, volunteering as a tutor and teacher's assistant.
Veronika will enroll in Harvard in the fall.
Zachary Greenberg
Desert Mountain High School
Scottsdale, Arizona
Zachary has demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities as his school's National Honor
Society President, Varsity Basketball Team Captain, and International Baccalaureate
Program Ambassador, among other positions. He would like to study law in college and
promises to continue to follow the practice of making time for "tikkun olam," a Hebrew
phrase that means "taking care of the world,"--of understanding the importance of social
action and giving back to the community. His IB Coordinator sums up Zachary this way:
"His academic and athletic gifts are many but he uses them so well; with character
compassion, and enthusiasm for life."
Neeraj Nagarajan
Tamuning, Guam
John F. Kennedy High School
Neeraj is a truly outstanding student; he exemplifies excellence in academics, in
performance, journalism, tennis, and leadership. He is captain of the mock trial team, and
president of Youth for Youth, a club solely dedicated to community service. He won the
fourth place grand award at the International Science and Engineering Fair and also
participated in the highly competitive NASA Summer High School Apprenticeship
Research program (SHARP). Neeraj has already made a difference on the island of
Guam, where as a sophomore he devised an Integrated Pest Management System to
control the New Guinea Sugarcane Weevil, a pest that very destructive to Guam's lush
greenery. He wishes to study engineering and help redesign the island's infrastructure to
protect its coral reefs. He also hopes to use his knowledge to develop a new fuel source
to reduce our dependency on crude oil. His vision is not only to help his native Guam,
but our whole world as well.
William Colton Payne
Salisbury, Maryland
Salisbury School
Colton is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar Finalist, has received a Bausch & Lomb
Honorary Science Award, is an All-Star athlete on the Lacrosse Team, as well as Senior
Class President and Captain of the Varsity soccer team. He is active in politics, theater,
and community volunteer work, especially as a medical center volunteer. His passion is
to study life sciences and continue on to medical school. He adds that his experiences
have taught him that '"seeking answers" is what he wants to do with his life, and he will
soon be seeking some of those answers in college at Washington and Lee University.
