End with a Bang!

I don't know how you plan to end your high school career; personally as a young scholar, I suggest you end it with a bang! This great conclusion is based on my personal participation in a 7 week pre-medicine (June 4 to July 22, 2005) Summer Educational Enrichment Program (SEEP) at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), in Augusta, Georgia.

During the jammed-packed exhilarating 7--week summer program, I learned a lot, had some fun, and made new friends for life! Subsequent to my enrollment, I learned that over 70 students from across the state of Georgia had applied for the 19 pre-college positions. Excitedly, I filled one of the 19 slots and boy was I in for the trip-of- a-lifetime!

The program consisted of 6 mandatory courses for pre-college students. Each of us was required to complete successfully the following courses: Biology (the only course in the program with transferable college credits), Chemistry, Medical Writing I, Analytical and Verbal Reasoning, Medical/Library Research, and Problem Solving Mathematics. In addition, we were required to attend weekly medical forums, career fairs, and university styled planned socials, concurrent to completing 24 volunteer hours at the very busy hospital on campus! The program was awesome!

I earned A's in all courses except Chemistry. I missed the "A" by THREE POINTS! Unfortunately, I had ONE not so good day in lab! Through it all, we really got the feel of being a student in a medical school. I had a wonderful time in the health learning atmosphere. It was really cool wearing the white lab coat weekly and being around establish health professionals.

As I reflect on the summer 2005 experience-7 weeks of banging the brain with medical information and assumed responsibilities at the Medical College of Georgia, now I see more clearly why everything they (the assigned medical faculty and staff) put us through only enriched our lives and gave each of us a huge push in the direction of our goals.

It was truly a bang of an experience! I will always be grateful to the dynamic faculty and staff of the Summer Educational Enrichment Program at the Medical College of Georgia.

I believe that the friends I made share similar memories and gratitude. Without question, we all lost plenty of sleep, studied hard, hung out on weekends, and tried to understand the transcription of RNA and the translation, too. Most importantly, I believe that if you were to ask any of the 2005 SEEP participates to raise their hand to the question: "If they believe this program was harder than you thought or just like you thought?".....everyone without a thought would give accolades and at the same time raise their hands attesting that it was HARDER! . . . but we ALL survived! Thanks to good academic preparations in high school, in addition to the organizational skills and strategic programming on the part of the SEEP administrators and scholarly instructions and support of the medical faculty.

In closing, the point of this article is to inspire fellow NSHSS members to explore the world of summer school and enrichment programs. You may love it in the beginning, hate it in the middle; but when all is said and done, you will be glad that you ended your high school experience with an educational bang!
