Rocky River High School
Rocky River, Ohio
NSHSS is pleased to honor Rocky River High School in Ohio as its newest Claes Nobel School of
Distinction. A Blue Ribbon school, Rocky River was selected for its success in reaching students to whom
mathematics doesn't come easily. In an era when U.S. schools appear to be lagging behind in
mathematics and science, Rocky River is doing its part to counteract that trend. The school has
created a test preparation lab with resources ranging from flash cards to study guides to software
on a mobile cart unit, and all of these resources address the Ohio Graduation Test, the SAT, and the
ACT. Meanwhile, more than 60 students participate in a peer-tutoring group called Students for
Other Students (SOS), which sends tutors to the district's four schools to help younger students and
classmates struggling with the subject. Last year, SOS tutors accumulated more than 1,400
volunteer hours. In addition to improving state testing scores, the tutors developed a greater
understanding and appreciation of mathematics.
Congratulations to Rocky River and the Rocky River School District, which has received an
"excellent" rating on the Ohio Department of Education report cards. The school will receive a $500.00 award from the NSHSS Foundation a non-profit arm which
recognizes excellence in schools and teaching.
To nominate your school for consideration, please email Dr. Susan Thurman with an explanation of why your school deserves this recognition. Be sure to
