Join Fellow NSHSS Members at the
International Youth Democracy Summit
This summer, leading historians,
government representatives, civic activists, and young people like you from the
United States and around the world will come together to commemorate America’s
400th Anniversary…. a journey that gave rise to a new nation and
changed the world.
Now, we want you to make
your own life-changing journey by joining as a delegate at the International
Youth Democracy Summit, August 7-12, 2006. The University of Virginia,
Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission, and Presidential Classroom
have partnered to provide this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The summit will
kick off the prestigious year-long Foundations and Future of Democracy
international conference series, hosted by the federal Jamestown 400th
Commemoration Commission.
We invite NSHSS members to
become delegates at the International Youth Democracy Summit--joining 300
outstanding and diverse young leaders who are excited about exploring the
origins of democracy in Jamestown and Williamsburg and discussing how the legacy
of democratic governance can be applied around the world. Seminars, debates,
films, and ceremonies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville will make
early American history real, relevant, and vital. As a delegate at the
International Youth Democracy Summit, you will:
Take your place in history.
Travel back 400 years to discover how Native American, European, and African
cultures contributed to modern democracy. Hear from leading historians. Explore
native and colonial villages at Jamestown and Williamsburg as well as
Jefferson’s home at Monticello. Lodge and learn at the University of Virginia,
where you’ll be part of the historic opening ceremonies—a spectacular
celebration of America’s 400th Anniversary.
Take your place on the political stage.
Visit the corridors of past and current power at the Virginia House of Burgesses
in Williamsburg, Virginia and the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Interact with
leading historians, civic activists, and high-level government officials through
a series of educational seminars. Create a plan to improve your community.
Participate in riveting crossfire debates with your peers about the rise of
democracy the world over.
The deadline to apply is May
5, 2006. Visit
www.IYDS.net to learn more about this historic
event and to download the program brochure and application. NSHSS members can
apply for the 30 full- and 30 half-tuition
scholarships for this program--made possible through the generous
contributions of the University of Virginia.
