NSHSS Members Win $100,000 and $50,000 Scholarships at Intel Science Talent Search
Congratulations to NSHSS member Shannon Babb of Highland, Utah, recent winner of the 2006 Intel
Science Talent Search. A senior at American Fork High School, Shannon was selected from nearly 1,600
entrants for her research on protecting water quality. She is also recently been named finalist in the
Coca-Cola Scholars Program the AXA Achiever for the State of Utah. She will be featured in the U.S.
News & World Report in the April 17th issue, so be sure to check it out.
As a resident of the United States" second driest state," Shannon is a passionate environmentalist who
spent six months studying the Spanish Fork River drainage system to assess the effects of human and
animal behavior. Her practical solutions to reduced pollution runoff include replanting along the
riverbanks, reducing animal grazing in those areas, directing runoff into settling ponds, and educating
people about how to discard household chemicals. Over the competition's 65-year history, winners have
gone on to earn more than 100 of the world's most coveted honors, including six Nobel Prizes. Intel has
sponsored the event since 1998. Shannon says, "I proudly list NSHSS on my resume," and perhaps we
will hear her name in the future as a Nobel laureate.
Congratulations as well to Yuan "Chelsea" Zhang, NSHSS member from Montgomery Blair High School in
Rockville, Maryland, who won the $50,000 third-place scholarship.
