Notre Dame Academy
Los Angeles, California
NSHSS is pleased to recognize Notre Dame Academy in Los Angeles,
California, as a Claes Nobel School of Distinction. The school will
receive a $500.00 award from the NSHSS Foundation, which recognizes excellence in schools and teaching. The school
was nominated for this award by member Jennifer Chandler, whose
enthusiasm for the school intrigued the committee to research her
school. NDA's dedication to serving the community has led to its
selection, in particular in fulfilling this goal: The Academy's student-
centered program stresses the importance of personal spirituality,
leadership, concern for the common good, service to one another and
to the greater community. Within the context of spiritual and moral
values, students learn to view the world globally -- with its many
opportunities and challenges. Please read Jennifer's nomination of her
school, which has been named a National Blue Ribbon School of
Excellence.
Jennifer states:
"My school, Notre Dame Academy (NDA), has made a difference in my
life as well as in the community. In addition to being an excellent
school for academics, Notre Dame Academy offers many other
opportunities for students to learn and grow. The mission of Notre
Dame Academy is to "educate the whole person," which it does
through a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports teams,
student council, campus ministry groups, clubs, and many visual and
performing arts groups and classes. One thing that makes NDA
different from many other schools is its all girl atmosphere. While
many people may believe that an all girl atmosphere detracts from the
high school experience, in fact, I believe it does just the opposite. This
atmosphere allows girls to focus on their education and develop
confidence because they feel freer to speak their opinions. NDA offers
many opportunities for girls to take active leadership roles in their
school community with clubs and other activities for a wide variety of
interests. The Notre Dame community is very involved in helping
others. One club at our school called HOPE, which stands for 'helping
other people everywhere,' runs many fundraisers throughout the year.
Each month the HOPE club sponsors a Buck-a-Stuff, where students
pay $1 and can wear non-uniform dress for the day. The club sends
the money raised to our sister school in Uganda, or other organizations
in need. During the Thanksgiving holiday each religion class sponsors a
family in need and provides them with items for all the meals on
Thanksgiving. Although the school is a Catholic school, in religion class
we do not only learn about the Catholic faith we also learn about world
religions and social justice issues. I feel that I have definitely grown as
a person because of my experiences at Notre Dame Academy, and I
am very glad that I can attend this wonderful school."
