Nearly 500 members and guests gathered from 30 states to celebrate our annual NSHSS
Scholar's Day on May 13, 2006, in the Dirksen Senate Building in Washington, D.C. The grand
event honored our members, scholarship recipients, and Educators of Distinction. Speakers
included NSHSS education partners from Griffith College in Dublin, Ireland; the National
Outdoor Leadership School; World Scholar-Athlete Games; Projects Abroad, the National
Honors Convocation; and Presidential Classroom, which generously helped host our event.
NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel gave the keynote address, and presented scholarships and awards
to outstanding educators. Members were able to meet and hear from Student Council
representatives Gary Crosby, Andrew Thompson, and Anya Rasulova. Scholarship recipients
Sunny Cowell (Burlington, New Jersey) and Jennifer Chao (Ellicott City, Maryland) performed
beautifully as soloists on the viola and violin. Other scholarship recipients in attendance
included Veronika Bordas (San Antonio, Texas); Kate Flores (Stamford, Connecticut);
Stephanie Glagola, (Middletown Maryland), Christopher Parish (Wichita Falls, Texas): and
Santi Wong (Baldwin, New York). A special "Hero" award was presented to Holden Hylander
of San Antonio, Texas, whose father told the group the story of how his son saved his life in a
near-tragic boating accident. Additionally, Mr. Nobel presented a School of Distinction Award
to Richard Montgomery High School (Rockville, Maryland) and "Rocket Corps" coordinator Julie
Good, for the school's innovative teacher intern program.
