NEW Scholarship Announcement - $5,000 essay competition deadline July 31, 2006
Author Justine Headley has provided the following information to announce to NSHSS members:
As a new author deeply committed to education, I am delighted to announce a $5,000 college scholarship
essay contest that I'm personally sponsoring. The types of students in NSHSS are exactly the ones I wish
to help. After graduating from Stanford and then working at Microsoft, I've become a young adult
novelist. It's hard not to be influenced by the incomparable Bill Gates whose philanthropy is both
humbling and inspiring. So with every novel that I publish, my goal is to tie it into some kind of
community service.
For my debut novel, NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH (and a few white lies), I've created a $5,000 college
scholarship based on an essay contest, which will go into effect on April 1 to coincide with the launch of
my book. I wanted to do something to honor my parents, first generation immigrants who sacrificed to
send all four of us kids to college. (Stanford wasn't exactly inexpensive when I attended, and college
certainly isn't now!) My novel is about a half-Asian, half-white girl searching for identity as she figures out
her place in the world--and it's at math camp at Stanford University where things come together for her.
NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH (and a few white lies) is the lead title for Little, Brown/TimeWarner's spring
list, and two National Book Award winners have endorsed the book, one calling it "a work of art."
