NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel Delivers Commencement Speech in Ireland

NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel, Nobel Laureate John Hume, and Griffith President Diarmuid Hegarty

On November 16th, 2006, NSHSS Chair Claes Nobel delivered the commencement speech to the graduates of the School of Law at Griffith College in Dublin, Ireland. Griffith College, the largest private university in Ireland, is also funding three scholarships for NSHSS members this year. Mr. Nobel and NSHSS Vice President Maudelle Driskell met with college officials and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate John Hume, who was awarded Griffith College‘s Distinguished Fellowship Award at the graduation ceremony. Mr. Hume expressed considerable interest in the organization and its students and in participating in a program in conflict resolution with our members in the summer of 2007 in Ireland. We will post details about this exciting international opportunity in the new year.

Mr. Hume won the Peace Prize in 1998 alongside the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party David Trimble. He is credited with being the thinker behind many of the recent political developments in Northern Ireland. He is the only person in history to have won the three biggest peace awards in the world: the Nobel Peace Prize, the Gandhi Peace Prize, and the Martin Luther King Award.
