  • Shambrekia' Wise shares her thoughts and best wishes as she wraps up her junior year at the University of Arkansas, where she is a biology and pre-med student, as well as President of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students.

Midway through my junior year of college, I realize that time is really flying by! It seems just yesterday thatI first stepped foot on new terrain and now three years later, I am holding leadership positions, preparing myself for the MCAT next summer, as well as mentoring to younger individuals on campus. I can truly say that I have had a wonderful college experience; however, I am still learning day by day new ways of becoming a more effective as well as a positive leader. This past summer, I was able to participate in the Biomedical Careers Program in New Brunswick, New Jersey, which thoroughly disciplined me in the area of science. I engaged in courses such as microbiology, organic chemistry, and labs for eight weeks. This priceless experience put me a few steps ahead of my classmates for courses that I planned on taking in the fall. As a result, my grades from midterm reflect my hard work as well as study habits, and I can say I am pretty happy with them. I know the semester has been difficult with organic chemistry as well as physics on my plate, but I like being challenged. It gets frustrating at times, but quitting is never an option. I have mentors that constantly encourage me to always strive for more than I think I am capable of accomplishing.

NSHSS members, I congratulate you all on achieving such a milestone in your life as a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, and it is my sincere hope that you all will succeed and become tomorrow’s greatest leaders. Always try your best and never be afraid to reach out for help. I, as well as my fellow counselor members, are here for you and please don’t ever forget that. We know how it feels to be in your shoes, so don’t feel like you can’t talk to us about something. Regardless if it is an internship you are searching for, academic support that you need, or even just emotional support, we are your family and your success means more to us than what you will ever know. I leave you with a very popular quote:

“Two roads diverged in a wood
And I took the one less traveled by
And that has made all the difference.”
-Robert Frost

My question to you is what will you do? The poet chose to take the road that not many had; we expect you to not follow a path, but to pave your own destiny. Good luck as this school this year ends and a new one begins, and I hope to see you all rise above the stars.
