DEADLINE ROBERT SHEPPARD LEADERSHIP AWARD 02.01.2008

NSHSS Partners with Nobel Peace Laureate Project

NSHSS is excited about partnering with The Nobel Peace Laureate Project, a winding Peace Path in Alton Baker Park in Eugene, Oregon, designed to honor the twenty-three United States Peace Prize Laureates, who have not been honored as a group previously. In addition to creating the first monument in the U.S. specifically to recognize Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, the project is also creating the first American Nobel Peace Laureate education program for use in elementary through high school levels. These materials are being made available for free on the Internet for classroom use.

John Attig is President of the Nobel Peace Laureate Project, a grass roots organization dedicated to educating others about the nation’s Peace Laureates in order to inspire other to follow their examples. John is a retired history teacher who realized that while many generals are honored very few people recognize or know much about the peacemakers of this country. The Nobel Peace Laureate Project is his idea, and he is the driving force behind this project.

The City of Eugene, Oregon, has set aside over two plus acres site for the Peace Path. Along the Path, accompanied by a serpentine wall, will be tall pillars that display plaques showing an image of each Peace Laureate, a description of why the Laureate merited the award, and a quote from that individual. New plants and trees will be planted to provide a natural canopy over the path. NSHSS is sponsoring the Theodore Roosevelt monument, honoring America’s 26th president, who received the Nobel Prize in 1906 for mediating negotiations that led to the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth (1905) ending the Russo-Japanese War. President Roosevelt is perhaps best known for his work for conservation. During his tenure in the White House from 1901 to 1909, he provided federal protection for almost 230 million acres, and NSHSS is pleased to help commemorate his efforts for both peace and natural preservation.
