Lessons That I've Learned OUTSIDE Class

In my senior year of high school, a dermatologist whom I knew learned about my dream to become a pre-med student at a college to which I was applying Early Decision. It wasn't Johns Hopkins. After wishing me luck in the college application process, she told me to keep in mind that there are several ways to become a physician. She ended up taking a different educational path than she initially wanted, but she still reached her ultimate goal: to become a dermatologist. She told me to keep that advice in mind. I did, and I still do. A month after my conversation with that dermatologist, I was deferred by the college to which I'd applied "ED." A few months later, I was rejected. I was disappointed, but now I'm a pre-med student at Johns Hopkins who's happier here than I ever hoped to be at the other college.
Looking back at the college application process in high school and my freshman year experiences at Johns Hopkins, I've learned that some age-old lessons are true. (They're age-old for a reason.) First, you should set goals. Second, you should do everything possible to achieve your goals in an ethical manner. Third, in the ideal world, putting your maximum effort should be enough for you to reach your goals. In the real world, however, circumstances beyond your control might prevent you from reaching your goals. If they do, then you should make the most of your current situation. Thus, you could still have a sense of achievement.

New York City: Spring Break 2007 with the Herron School of Art & Design
Olutope A. Omosegbon
Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis
College students tend to attribute the idea of the words spring break to seven days of fun in the sun on a beach somewhere along the coast of a warm city in the United States. However, during my sophomore year of college, I decided to venture north, earn a credit hour, and see a part of the U.S. that I never had seen before this trip!
Never had I imagined that my 20th birthday would be spent in one of the greatest American cities—New York City! This March, I joined forces with a group of people that I normally would not encounter for an experience that has left me with extraordinarily beautiful memories. I stayed in an international youth hostel on the Island of Manhattan around 103rd street and Amsterdam Avenue.
From March 10th to March 15th 2007, I was a part of a small group of students from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis that traveled to New York City in order to experience art at its finest. While there, I was able to visit the following museums (in no particular order): The Guggenheim; The Whitney; The Museum of Modern Art; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Frick Collection (my personal favorite); The American Folk Art Museum; The Cooper-Hewitt; The National Design Museum. In each of the museums, I was exposed to art that I may not have come across in my lifetime. I even saw the original Starry Night painted by the famous Vincent van Gogh. I also enjoyed the other sites of New York City like the Empire State Building, the subway system, the narrow streets, and Central Park. One day, my group and I ventured to the Brooklyn Bridge and walked its entire length back to Manhattan.
New York City is so diverse and full of life. It truly does not sleep! Climb the Empire State Building, check out Times Square, and enjoy the cool, crisp air. You will not be let down by this wondrous city’s offerings. You’ll be amazed by its size, utility, and ability live up to all of your expectations!
