Keeping Up with Alums
Jamal Grimes receives Fulbright Scholarship
We are always pleased to hear of member accomplishments as our students go out into the world. Jamal Grimes, former NSHSS Student Council member and National Scholar Award recipient, is fulfilling his potential at Florida State University, where he has received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in South Korea.
The Fulbright Program is a program of educational grants founded by United States Senator J. William Fulbright. The program was established to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. It is considered one of the most prestigious award programs, operating in 144 countries. More Fulbright alumni have won Nobel Prizes than those of any other academic program, and former recipients also include former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, and Nelson Mandela.
Fulbright fellows are chosen for their exceptional leadership potential and are given the opportunity to teach, study, or conduct research internationally. The goal of the program is to further develop the student's international competence and cross-cultural experience. Keep in mind the Fulbright Fellowships if you are going to pursue graduate study.

Greg Woodburn, Ventura High School, California, created a volunteer project to donate used running shoes to children in need. His S.O.S. (Save our Soles) project has led him to find both a rewarding supporter and friend in Track and Field Champion Deena Kastor: “American Distance Runner Deena Kastor is a True Champion.”
Love Letters: Random Cards of Kindness
Kaitlyn Chana, Lake Brantley High School junior from Longwood, Florida, has started a national organization, Love Letters: Random Cards of Kindness, Inc., whose mission is to create positive and inspirational cards for children with life-threatening illnesses. Please visit her website at www.LoveLettersCares.com to learn more about this unique organization. As Kaitlyn says, "Sick children need more than medicine; they need love and support from family, friends and their Love Letters Pen Pals.”
