Nathan Georgette selected for national Junior Science and Humanities Symposium


Nathan Georgette, a junior at Allen D. Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, was recently selected as a speaker at the 45th Annual Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium (JSEHS) at the University of Florida. The event is a three-day meeting of high school students and teachers involving laboratory visits, lectures from prominent professors, humanities presentations, and a student speaker competition. Nathan was chosen from 26 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from Florida to present his scientific research, entitled “Analysis of the Effects of Population Dynamics and Gradual Immunization on the Basic Reproductive Number and Herd Immunity Threshold. His sponsoring teacher Mr. Steve Lyons was recognized as well. Nathan received a $1,500 scholarship and will represent Florida at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in April in Orlando, Florida. He will compete there for scholarship money and a trip to the summer 2008 London Youth Science Forum.

The National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium program is funded principally by the U.S Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in an effort to encourage careers in science research.

Nathan is ranked number one in his class and is a journal article reviewer for "Epidemiologoy and Infection." He is also an accomplished pianist.
