INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY SHOWCASE
LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY, SWEDEN

Brief History

Exploring new fields, walking new paths. A non-traditional cooperation across subject and faculty borders defines the interdisciplinary approach that is the hallmark of Linköping University (LiU). An entrepreneurial spirit of education characterizes the university’s history. Since its foundation in the 1960´s, the university has established itself as an innovative and modern institution in both education and research. It was first founded as an independent college in 1970 and in 1975 it became Sweden’s sixth university.

LiU comprises four faculties:

  • Institute of Technology
  • Faculty of Arts and Sciences
  • Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Educational Sciences

Rewarded for excellent education

Last year the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, after an exhaustive evaluation process with the help of a panel of international experts, appointed five Centers of Excellent Quality in Higher Education.. Two of these belong to Linköping University: Medicine and Control Systems, the latter a core subject in all our engineering programs.

Studies in English for Free Movers

LiU has established several master’s programs in key education and research areas in technology and science, social sciences, humanities, and educational sciences. There are also a number of single-subject courses taught in English.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers a summer course entitled Swedish Experiences: An Introduction to Swedish History and Culture as seen through the Landscape of Östergötland. "The idea of this introductory course is that it is experiential with lots of excursions," explains Marie Clark Nelson, professor of history who is responsible for the course. The county of Östergötland is used as a laboratory to gain basic knowledge about Swedish history and Swedish cultural heritage.

A Nordic Studies semester course open to international students starts in the Autumn of 2008. The course can lead to admission to a master´s program in Nordic Studies (four Nordic countries are involved in the teaching of the master´s program).
