Chelsea Hester, of Monroe, Georgia, has been selected for the public service college scholarship sponsored by NSHSS partner Presidential Classroom. This annual scholarship competition is open to NSHSS members who have participated in a Presidential Classroom program. Hester, who graduates in 2009 from Monroe High School, attended the Presidential Classroom Future World Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. Claes Nobel, will personally present the award to her at the scholar recognition event at The Carter Center on December 6, 2008.
Hester was singled out for this award for her community leadership activities and her demonstrated potential for taking advantage of her Presidential Classroom experience. During the Summit, she participated in a model United National simulation program, designed to teach negotiation and diplomacy skills. “My Presidential Classroom experience immensely strengthened my leadership skills,” Hester said. “It provided me with an opportunity to take charge, be assertive, and voice my opinion."
Since 1968, Presidential Classroom has provided the next generation of civic leaders with an extraordinary academic and leadership development experience in Washington, D.C., through its programs for high school juniors and seniors. Presidential Classroom takes students behind the scenes in the nation’s capital for seminars and discussions featuring members of Congress, presidential appointees, senior military officials, top business leaders, and journalists. Students also observe the United States Congress in action, tour the capital city, and debate key issues with their peers. NSHSS and Presidential Classroom have joined together to promote and recognize academic excellence, leadership, scholarship, and service to high school scholars. NSHSS members receive a program discount, opportunities for financial aid for the program, and the opportunity to compete for a $750.000 college scholarship.
