Spelman College recently hosted a special member event on its campus in Atlanta for NSHSS students to learn about this prestigious college and the admissions process.
Students and their families spent the day on October 13 at Spelman with admissions officers, professors, and Spelman students. The day began wit a gathering in the Camile Olivia Hanks Cosby Auditorium with a welcome from Spelman President Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, who expressed her enthusiasm for the caliber of the NSHSS members present. Dr. Tatum, a renowned scholar, teacher, clinical psychologist, and race relations expert, has been president of Spelman College since August 2002. Prior to assuming this role, she spent 13 years at Mount Holyoke College where she served as a psychology professor, department chair, dean of the college, and acting president. Dr. Tatum has also served on the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities and of Wesleyan University. A member of President Bush's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, in 2008 Tatum was named one of the "100 Most Influential Georgians" by Georgia Trend Magazine.
Following the greetings from Dr. Tatum, NSHSS President James Lewis inspired those present to remember that they will enter college as an “I,” but through bonding and working with others, each student will leave Spelman as a “we”—connected to an amazing network of scholars and community-minded sisters. NSHSS presented a scholarship sponsored by partner Kaplan Test Prep to member Alexis Carter, a freshman at Spelman who has joined the NSHSS Student Council. Alexis offered some words of advice for seniors and is featured in our College Corner this month.
Assistant Director of Admissions Alexis Hudson gave students an admission overview, and the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Geneva Baxter explained Spelman’s variety of academic offerings. Students and parents were hosted to lunch and campus tours, and attended a financial aid presentation and a student panel discussion.
This opportunity offered a great chance to learn about the admission process up close and to personally meet with admissions officials.
