NSHSS
and Semester at Sea (SAS) are partnering to offer members a unique study
abroad opportunity and a great way to take advantage of membership
beyond high school. The SAS program is offering two full
scholarships for their summer programs for students who have completed
at least one semester of college. Two scholarships will be granted
for summer 2009 (the scholarships are worth approximately $10,000 each).
NSHSS is accepting applications for summer 2009 starting immediately.

The 2009 summer program
with SAS offers students 9 to 12 college credits through the University
of Virginia. This summer’s program theme is Human Rights and Social
Justice in the Mediterranean World. The trip will sail to Halifax,
Nova Scotia, Canada; Cadiz, Spain; Naples, Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Piraeu (Athens), Greece; Istanbul, Turkey; Varna, Bulgaria; Alexandria
(Cairo), Egypt; Casablanca, Morocco; and Norfolk, VA, USA.
Student council member Anne Lewis attended the fall 2008 Semester at Sea
trip, and wrote about her experience for our newsletter. She says,
“Semester at Sea has changed my life. When people ask me ‘how was your
trip?’ I am not even sure where to begin. The memories are endless and
