Semester at Sea Summer Program Scholarship Recipients Announced

NSHSS and Semester at Sea (SAS) have partnered to offer members a unique study abroad opportunity and a great way to take advantage of membership beyond high school.  The SAS program offers two full summer study abroad travel scholarships exclusively for NSHSS students who have completed at least one semester of college. SAS waives the program application fee for NSHSS members, who can also apply for other financial aid through the program.

We are very pleased to announce the two recipients of the 2009 Semester at Sea Study Abroad Program (the scholarships are worth approximately $10,000 each).  Our scholarship recipients for 2009 are Erick Paulino, of Miami, Florida, a rising junior at Sarah Lawrence College, and Joshua Hernandez, of Seattle, Washington, who has just completed his freshman year at MIT.  Congratulations to both, who are busy preparing for their summer-long learning adventure.

The summer program with SAS offers students 9 to 12 college credits through the University of Virginia.  This summer’s program theme is Human Rights and Social Justice in the Mediterranean World. The trip will sail to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; Cadiz, Spain; Naples, Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Piraeu (Athens), Greece; Istanbul, Turkey; Varna, Bulgaria; Alexandria (Cairo), Egypt; Casablanca, Morocco; and Norfolk, VA, USA.

Student council member Anne Lewis attended the fall 2008 Semester at Sea trip and wrote about her experience for our newsletter. She says, “Semester at Sea has changed my life.  When people ask me ‘how was your trip?’ I am not even sure where to begin. The memories are endless and the potential for growth is huge.”

For those graduating in 2009, start thinking now about a summer studying abroad with Semester at Sea in 2010.  Information will be posted on the web in the fall.
