The National Society of High School Scholars offers the following academic
scholarships annually to members only:
1. The Claes Nobel Academic
Scholarships - $5,000
2. National Scholar Awards - $1,000
3. Robert P. Sheppard Leadership Award - $1,000
4. Academic Paper Awards - $250
5. Partner Scholarships Exclusively for
NSHSS Members
We are working to expand our exclusive scholarship offerings as well as
provide opportunities for members to compete for awards based on talents
in the arts and sciences. If you know of a person or organization that
would like to sponsor a scholarship or academic competition, please put
them in contact with
Susan Thurman.
1. Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships for
Members
NSHSS members have the opportunity to compete for four $5,000 scholarships
to be awarded annually. All high school members are eligible, with the
exception of relatives of NSHSS staff members and relatives of scholarship
reviewers.
Apply online by going to the member log in page and selecting the
"scholarship" tab at the top.
You may update your scholarship application as many times as necessary
prior to the deadline: November 30, 2004.A minimum of 100 finalists will be considered for each scholarship. Selection
of finalists is based on the following criteria:
Academic performance
Demonstrated leadership
School and extracurricular activities
Community service
Finalists are notified by mail and requested to submit an essay, photo,
and school recommendation forms provided by the Society. The scholarship
committee bases its final decision on the strength of the student’s
application and on the strength of the educator’s recommendations.
All scholarships are cash awards which can be used for educational
purposes at any college of the recipient’s choice. Scholarship
checks will be made out to the university designated by the student.
2. National Scholar Awards
These are $1,000 awards given to selected finalists for the Claes Nobel
Academic Scholarships. The application process is identical to that for
the Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships. The number will vary based on the
number and quality of finalists' applications. Deadline: November
30, 2004.
3. Robert P. Sheppard Leadership Award
This scholarship is for $1,000 awarded annually to an NSHSS member
demonstrating outstanding commitment to community service and initiative
in volunteer activities. The annual deadline is February 1.

4. Academic Paper Awards
All members have the opportunity to submit academic papers for
scholarships for $250 awards.
Deadline for submission is: May 1,
2005.
The
number of awards will be determined by the quantity and quality of
entries.
Requirements: Submit an academic paper that you have written as a junior
or senior for a class assignment. The paper must be a research paper,
original essay, or analytical paper. There is no minimum word or page
requirement. You may submit up to three separate papers.
The following will not be accepted: creative writing, journal
entries, computer programs, lab reports.
The paper must be accompanied
this form
verified by your
teacher including the name of the course for which the paper was written,
the nature of the assignment, and the date. You will need Adobe Acrobat
Reader to view and/or download the form. You can get a free viewer
here.
Submit papers to: The National Society of High School Scholars,
2531 Briarcliff Road, Headquarters 115, Atlanta, GA, 30329, ATTN: Academic
Paper Awards. Papers will not be returned. The academic papers will be
used for scholarship selection only.

Classroom
Presidential Classroom offers NSHSS members a $100 discount on programs as
well as a chance at the following scholarships exclusively for NSHSS
members. Members must use the PC/NSHSS Member application to receive
the discount. This application is also available in the new NSHSS
member kit and from
Presidential Classroom.

also compete for a tuition scholarship for a Presidential Classroom program
($1,200 value). Instructions are on the program application.
NSHSS members who
participate in Presidential Classroom can compete for a $750 academic
scholarship to a college of their choice.

People to People
Student Ambassadors Program
The Claes Nobel-People to People Student Ambassadors Program
Scholarship is a tuition scholarship for one of the 5 summer leadership
programs. The award covers the cost of the program; travel expenses are
the responsibility of the student. People to People will refund any
deposit paid by the student selected. The deadline is March 1, 2005 for
the 2005 summer programs in order to include those students who will
receive invitations in spring 2005 to the summer programs. The eligible
programs include law, leadership, medicine, international diplomacy, and
theater and the arts.
The comprehensive program tuition covers everything students will need
once they arrive at the program, including accommodations, three meals a
day, private motor coach transportation during the program, supervisory
personnel, academic credit, all activities during the program and all
course materials.

Members may also apply for financial aid for these programs through People
