Leadership Scholarship For College Students

College students who display leadership during their academic careers often evolve into the future leaders of tomorrow. At NSHSS, we honor those students by offering a $1,000 leadership scholarship for qualified college students who embody true leadership in their work and their actions.

The NSHSS Emerging Leader Award is designed to recognize an NSHSS member and leader who has made positive changes through leadership activities and initiatives. If you are a college student and know you have shown impactful leadership in your life so far, this might be the perfect scholarship opportunity for you.

Scholarship Eligibility

NSHSS college members worldwide who are enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate degree program as freshmen, sophomores, or juniors and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA are eligible for the NSHSS Emerging Leader Award for 2018. Applicants must be full-time students taking 12 or more credits during their Fall 2018 semester.

About the Leadership Scholarship

Sponsored by Morgan Vazquez, a 2009 NSHSS scholarship recipient and current Vice President and Senior Recruiter of Campus Strategy & Pipeline Development at BNY Mellon in New York City, the NSHSS Emerging Leadership Award is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a student who has made a significant and positive impact through leadership activities and initiatives. The recipient of the scholarship will be awarded the $1,000, which will be sent to the student’s 4-year accredited university (any 4-year accredited university applies) prior to the Fall 2018 semester.

Personal Statement Tips

The best course of action when writing your personal statement for the leadership scholarship is to BE YOU. Be creative in the way only you can be. Feel free to use quotes and references that give the scholarship committee a sense of who you are and what you bring to leadership in your life. Don’t worry about fitting some cookie-cutter definition of leadership. Write about what your leadership experience has meant to you.

Also remember quality over quantity. The scholarship committee would rather hear about one experience you are especially passionate about than hearing about all the activities on your resume. Be specific about your experience and ideas! When we ask you what leadership means to you and what your leadership style is, for example, think about your unique experiences and write from the heart. And, of course, make sure to follow directions and stick to the topic when writing your personal statement. Good luck!
