CIA STEM Camp 2020

NSHSS has an amazing opportunity for rising junior and senior high school members who are interested in STEM Careers! The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is looking for civic-minded students who are passionate about exploring STEM education in college and a curiosity about the application of STEM within the CIA.

For this event, a limited number of NSHSS scholars will be invited to participate in a 1-day, full-immersion CIA STEM Camp on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at the CIA Headquarters. Participants will learn firsthand about the inner workings of the Agency and the Intelligence Community through engaging workshops, Directorate Briefings, hands-on STEM challenges, an HQS Museum Tour, a visit to the CIA Store, and more.

Eligibility: NSHSS Members going into their junior or senior year of high school

Location: CIA Headquarters (Langley, VA)

When: Thursday, August 13, 2020

Application requirements: 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen (proof of citizenship will be required if invited)
  • Test Scores -- SAT and/or ACT
  • Personal Statement:
    • In approximately 500 words, please respond to all of the questions below:
      • Question 1: What area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Math (STEM) interest you and why? 
      • Question 2: What motivates you to become a leader in a STEM field?
      • Question 3: What intrigues you about the work of the Central Intelligence Agency? How have you imagined integration of STEM into the CIA's mission?
      • Question 4: Describe any school or community STEM activities in which you have participated in the last three years (i.e., science fairs, math club, after school programs, summer programs, etc.). Have you received any awards/recognition or held office in any of these activities?
  • Resume listing any other activities or achievements you would like to share with the selection committee
  • Transcript
  • A color headshot

*Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered for this event.

2. Click "RSVP to Events" and find "CIA STEM Camp 2020." 

3. Click "Apply" where you will be taken to the external application and you can upload all required documents. 

4. Be sure to mark each section "complete" in order to submit the whole application.

*Please note, this is an application based event. The review committee will choose and invite the top 35 applicants. 

**All applicants will be notified of their application status on June 15, 2020. 

NSHSS will provide all transportation via shuttle bus to and from the CIA Headquarters from the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. Attendees are responsible for transportation to this meeting spot. Due to limited space, parents, guardians, and guests of members selected for the tour will not be permitted to join. More information regarding transportation, meeting points, a detailed agenda, and background checks for security purposes will be provided to the selected participants.
