College Admissions Strategies for the Digital Age - A Parental Primer

These days, no one is arguing the importance of establishing an online persona as a prudent step towards college admission and career success. A crafted social media presence helps students show their best face to a watching world.

Even before the pandemic turned the world upside down, most colleges and universities viewed student social media as "fair game" to support their admissions and scholarship decisions. Now, when "test-optional" admissions has become the norm rather than the exception, online presence and digital engagement seem destined to be—along with grades & essays —a salient part of the admissions checklist.

The fact is, colleges and employers simply don’t care if they find pictures of your kids having fun (or even too much fun) on the internet. But, increasingly, they do care that the claims on their application reflect the realities of who they truly are. Conveying their true interests and commitments means more than building a boilerplate essay. And that’s where social media excels, offering a deeper dive into their true self than any shortlist of credits and accomplishments.
