Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch

NSHSS handpicks its partners carefully, searching for nonprofits, organizations, and companies that directly align with our mission to provide the best resources for our members and their families. We may receive compensation from our partners, at no cost to you.

For many years, Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) has partnered with NSHSS to advance global leadership among young scholars. In 2021 they established the Abercrombie & Fitch Your Personal Purpose Scholarship administered through the NSHSS Foundation and have previously sponsored the Global Diversity & Leadership Scholar Awards open to NSHSS members and the Anti-bullying Scholarships, a multi-year, renewable program. These scholarships help advance inclusion and diversity efforts at A&F Co.

A&F Co. imagines a world where everyone is confident, happy, comfortable and feels the freedom to be themselves. They also know the impact their customers and associates can have on the world as they embrace the journey of becoming who they are and live their personal purpose. In partnership with the NSHSS Foundation, A&F Co. is awarding Your Personal Purpose scholarships to high school seniors for doing just that. The worldwide competition is based on a submission from students exploring their personal purpose. These renewable scholarships will be awarded each year to the top candidates.

In the past, A&F has also sponsored receptions held in conjunction with select NSHSS member events. We also want to recognize A&F for having sponsored the NSHSS Fee Waiver Program, which covers the membership cost for students who qualify for membership but do not have the financial means to join.

Bocconi University

Bocconi University

NSHSS handpicks its partners carefully, searching for colleges and universities that directly align with our mission to provide the best resources for our members and their families. We may receive compensation from our partners, at no cost to you.

Established in 1902, Bocconi University is one of Europe’s top-ranked economics and business universities. Unique among Italian schools for its international outlook, Bocconi is widely recognized as one of the leading European institutions of higher learning and research in the fields of management, economics, and law. Bocconi’s Bachelor’s programs combine a strong theoretical background with real-world applications. A private university with 14,400 students (7,900 undergraduates), Bocconi attracts top students who want to develop the global business and cross-cultural skills necessary to become successful future business leaders. Bocconi’s campus is in downtown Milan -- Italy’s bustling commercial, financial, and cultural hub as well as a European hot spot for design, fashion, and media. From Milan, you can easily travel to the Mediterranean coast or the Alps in a couple of hours, in addition to exploring the wonders of Italy’s unrivaled cultural heritage.

Bocconi offers a wide range of fully-accredited, three-year Bachelor programs taught entirely in English:

- Bachelor of International Economics and Management

- Bachelor of International Economics and Finance

- Bachelor of Economics and Management for Arts, Culture, and Communication

- Bachelor of Economics and Social Sciences

- Bachelor of Economics, Management, and Computer Science

- Bachelor of Mathematical and Computing Sciences for Artificial Intelligence

- Bachelor of International Politics and Government

- Bachelor in Global Law

- World Bachelor in Business (in collaboration with University of Southern California and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)
*Four-year program with rotation through all three universities

These undergraduate programs offer a truly multicultural environment. Nearly half of students in the Bachelor’s programs taught in English are international, with over 100 nationalities represented.

International Opportunities

Bocconi offers its students a wide array of international opportunities. The Exchange Program network includes more than 286 prestigious schools and institutions in 54 different countries, including the United States (Yale, Harvard, USC, Georgetown, NYU, Northwestern, etc). Click here for more info.

In addition, students also have the possibility of completing an internship in Italy or abroad. Career Services offer excellent support to students throughout their studies, organizing Bocconi & Job events in Shanghai, Mumbai, London, Paris, and Milan, with approximately 500 employers participating. Investment Banks Weekends and Company presentations on campus are examples of some of the hundreds of employer events throughout the year.

Tuition & Scholarships

Tuition and fees for the 2022-2023 academic year are set at 13,130 Euro ($14,325 based on July 14, 2022 exchange rate). Accommodation is an additional fee.

International and Merit Awards: When evaluating students for admission, top candidates may be assigned a Merit or International Award covering 100% or 50% of yearly tuition and fees respectively. There is no need to apply for these merit scholarships as the Scholarship Committee assigns them independently and they can be renewed year after year.

Need-based financial aid: Students having a foreign residency, who are correctly enrolled, can apply for fees relief. Once enrolled, Bachelor of Science and Law Programs can, through the specific online application, request to be assigned to one of the three fees relief targets, consisting of a reduction of the ordinary tuition. The tuition relief is adjusted to the economic and asset situation of the household, based on evidence submitted.

ISU Bocconi Scholarship: Enrolled students may also apply for an ISU Bocconi Scholarship for contributions for participation in international exchange and internship programs.

www.unibocconi.eu/fees

www.unibocconi.eu/funding

US citizens can apply for a federal loan, as Bocconi is a FAFSA-approved institution.

How to Apply
Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year are open.

www.unibocconi.eu/admissions

It is recommended that candidates apply as soon as possible in order to be most competitive. Earlier session applications can have a greater chance of being successful, of receiving financial aid/scholarship opportunities, and of meeting all of the student visa deadlines (set for NON-EU applicants). Within each application period (i.e., November - January), there is no advantage to applying early in the application period vs. towards the deadline.

The Selection Process

Admission is based on the student's complete profile, including high school transcripts, aptitude test scores (SAT, ACT, or the Bocconi test), three AP courses by July, the student’s resume, and a motivational letter.

An overview of the selection process can be found here.

Full details on AP requirements and IB can be found here.

Bocconi Summer School for High School Students

If you are interested in spending a part of your summer in Italy and want to learn more about the university, consider Bocconi’s Summer School. Students can choose between different courses -- 2021 options included Luxury & Fashion, EU Sustainable Globalization, International Politics, and more -- all of which are taught entirely in English. The program, which runs for two weeks in early July includes interactive lessons by Bocconi professors in state-of-the-art facilities, with free time to explore cultural and social activities in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe.

Miami University was founded in 1809 and is one of eight original public ivies. Miami is a residential university located in Oxford, OH with an undergraduate population of 17,147 students. U.S. News & World Report recognizes Miami as the #1 public university in the nation for its commitment to undergraduate teaching and has consistently ranked the university in the top five for both private and public schools for the past eight years. All undergraduate students benefit from a well-rounded liberal arts foundation, developing life-long skills for any career. Miami ranks third in the nation among public institutions for the number of students who study abroad and offers study abroad options in over 90 countries. Undergraduate students participate with faculty and graduate students in significant research and scholarship activities.

Miami’s four-year graduation rate is among the top in the nation, and students are accepted into medical and law schools at rates far above the national averages. Additionally, more than four times as many on-campus interviews are conducted than at peer institutions. As a result, Miami is regularly cited by national publications as a best value in higher education. This recognition as having a high return on tuition investment is supported by surveys and national data that indicate that 97.3 percent of Miami students who graduated in 2017 were employed or were continuing their education within a year of graduation.

With 600+ student organizations, Miami is a place for students to live without pause and gain an education that pays dividends for a lifetime.

On September 15, 2018, an NSHSS Member Event was hosted on the Miami University campus. Check out the recap here.

To help our athletes navigate the complicating recruiting process, we’ve partnered with NCSA College Recruiting, Over the past 20 years, NCSA has refined the tools that student-athletes need during the college recruiting process to find their college match. Using hands-on guidance, college matching tools, and a network of 35,000+ college coaches, more than 200,000 student-athletes have made commitments to their college choice. Every day, the 750+ former college coaches and athletes at NCSA are helping high school athletes:

The following information will help athletes and their families better understand what the recruiting process is and how to put together an effective recruiting game plan.

Connect with college coaches and find your best college match. JOIN NCSA »

The Three Most Common Recruiting Pitfalls

There are three common mistakes athletes and families tend to make when it comes to recruiting:

  1. Assuming someone else is handling their recruiting. While your high school or club coach and parents will play a big role in your recruiting, you will have to put in the time and effort to find the right program for you and connect with college coaches.
  2. Not putting enough emphasis on academics. Talent and athletic ability will catch a college coach’s attention, but below-average academics will seriously limit your recruiting options.
  3. Not exploring all opportunities. It pays to seriously explore all of your options. Many athletes start with just one or two target schools in mind, only to find a college they love that wasn’t even on their radar.

College Recruiting from a Coach’s Perspective

While recruiting efforts vary across college programs at every division level, coaches tend to follow the same steps when recruiting talent. The following outline gives a very basic look at how most college coaches approach the recruiting process.

  1. Determine recruiting needs (position, grad year)
  2. Search online recruiting networks to evaluate recruiting profiles
  3. Connect with high school and club coaches to learn about prospects
  4. Evaluate prospects’ video, academic information, and social media accounts
  5. Begin to contact athletes, follow profiles, extend camp invites, and host camps
  6. Meet with recruits’ families and current coaches
  7. Check NCAA and NAIA eligibility status, extend official visit offers
  8. Make initial verbal offers
  9. Sign players, look for last-minute recruits or transfers

Recruiting Rules and Calendar

The NCAA recruiting rules and calendar outline how and when college coaches and recruits interact using four different periods: contact, evaluation, dead and quiet.

Contact period: During this time, coaches and athletes are free to communicate via email, text, phone call, direct message, as well as in-person on campus, at tournaments and/or at the recruit’s school and home. For most sports, coaches can begin reaching out to athletes starting June 15 after sophomore year.

Evaluation period: The NCAA evaluation period is a specific time when college coaches are allowed to watch an athlete compete in person or visit their school. However, coaches are not allowed to communicate with that athlete (or parents) off the college campus.

Dead period: During a dead period, all in-person contact between college coaches and recruits is strictly prohibited, meaning coaches are not able to talk to recruits on-campus, at their high school, at sports camps or even when running into them while out.

Quiet period: College coaches are prohibited from off-campus in-person contact with recruits or their families during a quiet period. This means coaches cannot watch athletes compete in-person, visit their high school, or talk to them at their home.

Communication with College Coaches

One of the most common misconceptions in college recruiting is that the process doesn’t start until coaches can contact recruits. Athletes who wait until the official contact date to start connecting with colleges will be busy playing catch up while other athletes are actively building relationships with college coaches.

To avoid falling behind in the recruiting process, high school athletes should begin reaching out to college coaches as early as freshman year. Below are a few tips for connecting college coaches via email, phone and social media.

Email: A great way to get on a coach’s radar is by sending an introductory email. Before hitting send, make sure you’ve done your homework about the coach, the school and the program. You should be able to explain why you are interested in the school and how you could contribute to the team. Don’t forget to include your basic athletic information, GPA and contact information, as well as a link to your NCSA Recruiting Profile.

Phone: As you can imagine, a coach’s email is often stacked with incoming emails. What many athletes don’t know is that coaches receive very few phone calls from recruits. A phone call is a great way to introduce yourself and make a memorable impression. Before the contact period officially starts, college coaches won’t be able to talk with you over the phone, so be prepared to introduce yourself in a voicemail.

Social Media: Platforms like Twitter and Instagram offer athletes another way to reach out and connect with coaches. Athletes should only use these platforms if they are active and monitor the channel regularly (so you don’t miss any messages). Be cautious when posting to your profile to ensure nothing questionable shows up on your account.

NCAA and NAIA academic eligibility

Not only do college coaches look for well-rounded student-athletes who are committed to both athletics and academics, but recruits must meet the academic eligibility requirements to compete at the college level. Whether you’re looking to compete with the NCAA or NAIA, starting freshman year, work with your guidance counselor or advisor at your high school to make sure you have met the requirements upon graduation.

Finding Your College Match

As you begin to narrow down your college options to a list of roughly 5 reach, 20 target and 5 safety schools, it’s important to answer the following questions:

Education and Major: Is there a field of study you are passionate about?

Geography: Would you like be close to home or across the country?

Experience: Do you want to compete all four years? Do you want a sport and social balance?

To help you through this process, we suggest using the NCSA Power Rankings, which lists the best college programs in each sport based on important factors, including size, location, academics, and cost, just to name a few.

Finding your best fit means really taking a close look at all the schools that offer what you’re looking for athletically and more importantly, academically. The goal is a four-year degree and you should ask yourself if you could be happy attending a school even if you could no longer play your sport.

Tools for Getting Recruited

NCSA Recruiting Profile

College coaches begin their recruiting process online, so the first step to connecting with college coaches in creating a recruiting profile. Every recruit’s profile should be completed with the following information:

NCSA provides a free recruiting profile to all of our members. More than 35,000 college coaches actively search NCSA profiles every year looking for athletes to fill their open roster spots.

Highlight Video

Highlight video is a valuable recruiting tool for college coaches, especially for those who are unable to easily watch recruits compete in person. A strong highlight video is between 3–5 minutes long, includes 20–30 clips from game footage and includes the athlete’s contact information at the start and end of the video. To make sure highlight video is easily accessible for coaches, upload your video to your NCSA Recruiting Profile and YouTube.

The Role of Camps, Combines, Showcases, and Tournaments

One of the necessary parts of any well-rounded recruiting process is attending camps, combines, showcases and tournaments. These events give college coaches the opportunity to watch a large number of recruits in a single place and allow top recruits to compete against one another. The challenge for any family is deciding what events to attend. Here is a guide for understanding the value of different recruiting events:

The above briefly covers the college recruiting process and NCSA’s role in helping student-athletes get recruited. Having this knowledge now will help get your recruiting effort off to a great start. If you have any more questions or would like more information about getting your recruiting plan in place, you can contact NCSA’s team at 1-866-495-5172.

connections with prospective employers through internships and work
    placements
   - the chance to study part of their degree overseas at one of the University’s many
    highly ranked partner institutions

With campuses based in and around the city of Brisbane, you will enjoy a diverse community of over 50,000 students, including over 12,600 international students from 140 different countries across the globe.

The University’s outstanding 215,000-plus alumni include a Nobel laureate, the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, an Academy Award winner, and leaders in government, law, science, public service, and the arts.

UQ is a founding member of the national Group of Eight, a leading group of Australian universities that conducts a significant portion of all university research in Australia, as well as one of only three Australian universities to be a member of the global Universitas 21, an alliance allowing UQ to offer students unique opportunities to participate in student exchanges and events throughout the world. Through this alliance, UQ students have participated in events such as the Summer School program in Mexico, Undergraduate Research Conference in Japan, and the Social Entrepreneurship program in Guatemala.

The University has nine world-class research institutes, and researchers whose innovations are having a global impact, including the creation of a cervical cancer vaccine, protection of the world’s food supply, and the installation of the largest photovoltaic solar panel in the southern hemisphere. As a UQ student you have the opportunity to be taught by and work alongside these researchers.

According to the QS World University Subject Rankings 2016, UQ ranks number one in Australia in Mineral Resources and Mining Engineering (10th globally) and Environmental Science (12th globally). The University also ranks 17th globally in Agriculture and Forestry and 18th in Education. UQ’s other QS global top-30 subjects are: Psychology (21), Development Studies (23), Chemical Engineering (25), Communications and Media Studies (25), Accounting and Finance (26), Veterinary Science (29), and Nursing (30).

In addition to flexibility in program choice, UQ students also benefit from the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of extracurricular activities during their studies. There are exchange opportunities to more than 185 partner institutions in 40 countries and access to more than 200 clubs and societies, as well as sports and cultural facilities.

The UQ Advantage Award program offers UQ students the opportunity to realise their aspirations and enhance their research, leadership, and cultural communication skills to ensure they are competitive in the employment market. It combines participation in a range of co-curricular activities across three core categories–Global and Cultural Engagement, Research and Entrepreneurship, and Social Responsibility and Leadership–and will give you access to a unique symposium series.

Where is UQ?
UQ has three campuses in and around Brisbane, the capital city of the state of Queensland. Brisbane is the third-largest city in Australia, after Sydney and Melbourne, and it has a multicultural population of around two million.

It has all the advantages of a large modern city, yet it retains the friendliness and charm of a small regional town. In the 2013 edition of the Lonely Planet Australia travel guidebook, Brisbane was named “Australia’s coolest city.”

An hour’s drive south of the city, you will find the golden beaches and theme parks of the Gold Coast. North of Brisbane you will find the Sunshine Coast beaches, national parks, rain forests, and attractions like Australia Zoo. Just off the coast, you will find the pristine Stradbroke and Moreton Islands, both popular day-trip and holiday destinations for locals and visitors alike.

Brisbane has hosted many large-scale cultural and sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cup, and the 2014 G20 leaders’ summit.

The University of Western Australia

Established in 1911 as Western Australia’s first university, The University of Western Australia (UWA) has an international reputation for remarkable and life-changing contributions across research, learning, and teaching. UWA is ranked in the world's Top 100 universities, and number one in Western Australia.

UWA is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight, a consortium of Australia’s eight leading universities, reputed for their quality of education and research across the world, as well as the Worldwide Universities Network and the Matariki Network of Universities.

Perth, Western Australia

Located on the west coast of Australia, Perth is the gateway city to Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

Perth is Australia’s hidden gem, and Australia’s sunniest capital city, with an average of eight hours of sunshine per day all year round. It is a city of growth and opportunity, with a laid back, relaxed vibe. Western Australia is Australia’s largest state and is home to amazing and diverse natural beauty, stunning beaches, world-class wineries, and famous Indian Ocean sunsets.

UWA is located five kilometers from Perth’s central business district, next to the iconic Kings Park and the Swan River. The University is often described as one of Australia’s most picturesque campuses.

Read here about the Top 10 Reasons to Study in Perth.

Student Experience

UWA offers a world-class student experience and has an innovative course structure allowing students the flexibility to design courses to meet their needs and develop skills to increase their employment and education prospects. More than 25,000 students are enrolled at UWA from more than 100 countries.

UWA offers a wide range of internationally recognized bachelor’s degrees designed to meet the growing demand for skills that address today’s shifting economic, social, and technological landscapes. Within a wide choice of both comprehensive and specialized degrees, students have more options and more opportunities to either design their own degree with two personalized majors or specialize just in one focus area, gaining a deeper level of understanding within a chosen field.

UWA also offers Combined Bachelor and Masters (CBMs), an accelerated pathway to a Master’s degree, where students complete a double major and a semester of more advanced study in three years and then complete a full year of postgraduate study.

High achieving high school students also have access to assured pathways to professional postgraduate degrees, such as the Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine, and Juris Doctor (Law). By taking an assured pathway, students can complete the study requirements in a shorter period of time, ie 6 years to become a Doctor rather than 7 years.

UWA degrees are extremely hands-on, with 60% of all majors incorporating a practical, work-integrated learning component.

Research

UWA delivers world-class research and continues to attract the world’s brightest minds. This year, Professor David Blair was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science for contributing to the first detection of gravitational waves. Professor Ryan Lister was awarded joint Scientist of the Year in the Premier’s Science Awards for his significant advancements in understanding the programming of cells in living creatures.

Community

UWA has a strong connection to industry and government and contributes to communities both locally and internationally. As the founder of the Perth Festival (the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere), UWA is part of Perth’s dynamic cultural scene and its campus is home to numerous galleries, museums, and theatres.

Scholarships

UWA encourages students to pursue excellence in their studies and offers a range of scholarships that recognize academic achievements and assist with the cost of study. Through the Global Excellence Scholarship, US high school students, as well as students from many other countries, can receive up to AUD$48,000 over four years for their undergraduate study with UWA.

UWA also offers the Global Sporting Excellence Scholarship to high-performing athletes from across the globe.
