NSHSS is pleased to announce that the following educators have been selected for $1,000 grants to attend professional development conferences this year to help them provide the best education possible for their students.

Helen Lindsey, English Teacher and Instructional Coach
Garfield Heights High School, Garfield Heights, OH
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Conference, New Orleans, LA

Ms. Lindsey often returns to school energized and rejuvenated after attending an educational conference and is confident that the ASCD Conference will enable her to not only become a better educator for her students, but to also pass her learnings along to her fellow educators. Ms. Lindsey has received an Outstanding Educator Award, which recognizes her district’s top educator annually. She has also started an afterschool program. At educational conferences, Ms. Lindsey has presented on topics such as “Zombies and Nonfiction.” Ms. Lindsey received a Bachelor of Science in education from Miami University and a Master of Science in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment from Walden University.

Paul Orbe, Science Teacher
Academy for Enrichment and Advancement-Union City High School, Union City, NJ
National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) Conference, Minneapolis, MN

Mr. Orbe looks forward to becoming a “true global educator.” He explains that attending the NSTA Minneapolis Area Conference will allow him “to effectively access information, deliver quality instruction and most important, communicate with students from other schools within the state, out of state and around the world.” Mr. Orbe has worked as a researcher for New Jersey Institute of Technology, New Teacher Center, and Education Development Center (EDC), Inc. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Rutgers University, a Master of Public Administration from City University of New York, and he is currently pursuing an Education Specialist degree from Arkansas State University. Mr. Orbe is one of six New Jersey educators to be awarded a Bayer Fellowship from the National Science Teacher Association. Mr. Orbe is a certified reader for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, a judge for the North Jersey Science Research Competition, and an official for USA Swimming.

Dominie Wilhite, Counselor
Nevada Union High School, Grass Valley, CA
National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC) Conference, Columbus, OH

All students attending Nevada Union High School will be positively influenced by Mrs. Wilhite’s participation in the NACAC Conference. Mrs. Wilhite coordinates six workshops for seniors and three evening programs for parents offering information regarding the college application process, financial aid, and researching various colleges. Mrs. Wilhite has created handbooks for fellow counselors, students, and parents after attending past conferences. She looks forward to serving as a representative for her students and gathering insights from college admission counselors. Mrs. Wilhite earned a Bachelor of Science in history from Pomona College and a Master of Science in Marriage & Family Therapy/School Counseling from California State University.
