NSHSS recently held a special Career Awareness Day in Carson, California hosted by the Tesoro Corporation at their Los Angeles Refinery, the largest refinery on the West Coast and a major producer of clean fuels.

Hosted by Greg Goff, CEO of Tesoro Corporation and NSHSS Advisory Board member, the event brought together leaders from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Tesoro Human Resources representatives and engineers, to provide insight on career and higher education opportunities within the industry. Jim Dear, Mayor of Carson, congratulated NSHSS members on their academic achievements and encouraged them to take advantage of all the information they would learn at the event.

The program began with a UCLA career, financial aid and admission panel. Panel members included Bill Beard, Liaison to Industry for the UCLA Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering Department; Edward Flores, Outreach Coordinator for UCLA Financial Aid Office; Dr. James Liao, Chair of the Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering Department; Leslie Mejia, Admissions Officer; and Dr. John Taborn, Associate Director for Counseling Services.  NSHSS President James Lewis moderated the panel.

During the networking lunch, 16 NSHSS members, who competed in an essay competition, were awarded the opportunity to have lunch with Greg Goff and David Foster, Vice President of Los Angeles Refinery. The afternoon program continued with two informative panel discussions led by Tesoro Corporation engineers who shared their guidance on pursuing a career with Tesoro Corporation.

NSHSS is grateful to Tesoro Corporation and UCLA for hosting and participating in a very meaningful program, expanding resources and guidance for NSHSS members seeking degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematical fields.
