Several hundred NSHSS scholars, parents, partners and educators gathered on the University of California, San Diego campus on Friday, May 30th, 2014, for an NSHSS member event. After an interactive tour of the campus, students took part in a college fair featuring such universities as King’s College London and Florida State University International Programs as well as government agencies including the U.S. Department of State.

The main festivities began just after noon with James Lewis, President and Co-Founder of NSHSS, giving the opening remarks. Students, educators, and parents alike were inspired by founder Mr. Claes Nobel’s speech titled “The Great World Betterment Crusade”. There to accept their scholarship awards were Suchi Amin and Jacob Gardenswartz, Abercrombie & Fitch Anti-Bullying Scholar award recipients; Keri Jucha, Robert Sheppard Leadership Award recipient; and Margaret Kahn, Di Yerbury International Scholar Award recipient. Beth Pann, Vice President of NSHSS, special presentation was made to the parent of an NSHSS scholar who recently passed away from cancer this past year.

UCSD’s beautiful campus and stimulating curriculum stole the show when Alan Houston, Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs took to the stage. With a setting filled with students from across the country and around the globe, the NSHSS San Diego member event truly exemplified what William Martin from the U.S. State Department said during his presentation: “California is the perfect example of a global community.”
